Meaningless move by spineless countries - it won't accomplish a thing! If one is displeased with China why buy their goods and profit from China made products. These Governments need to rethink their priorities if they are to have any meaning.

Absolutely because this is what China wants. They do not care about the sports they want the propaganda victory using fellow diplomats and pols around the world. By the hosting contract China does not invite anyone the IOC does and the IOC has said they feel betrayed by USA, Canada, UK, Australia and others.

Knowing China will use their athletes in political ways at the games, a diplomatic boycott seems best. A political boycott allows for a nation to air out grievances internationally as well fight propaganda inside the host country. As a long as an athlete from boycotting nation places higher than a Chinese athlete, the Chinese government can’t use that athlete to demonstrate Chinese superiority and thus hurting the CCP’s agenda.

Yes, but I support a full boycott. All athletes should stay home.

Sadly, I fear the political boycot is not going to make China change its resolve on human rights. It makes the whole scenario a bit of a dog and pony show

As an Aussie, I wouldn't go after being threatened of being blown to bits earlier this year by the CCP in protest !

NO !

I support any boycott against China.

But if any government decides to boycott the Olympics, it means they acknowledge China's crimes against humanity. So why don't they do more (full boycott, sanctions, embargo...)?

The hypocrisy is sickening.

Yes, so we should do nothing anywhere, right? Because doing something would be even worse than they hypocrisy or something, right?

I mean, I think it must be right...

I wish China all the best for their Winter Olympics.

They run the country the way they see fit. It's no one else's business.

Look at the human rights abuse in the United States, starting with how the cops mistreat and even murder people of color, especially Black folk. Judges give people of color longer and harsher sentences.

Muslim women are the most oppressed minority on our planet and yet everyone still buys oil from the Saudis and no one complains or lifts a finger to help them.

The hypocrisy is sickening.

So, good luck, China I hope everyone has an awesome Winter Olympics.

The measure is terribly diluted, the problem that originated it is extremely serious, so a full boycott would be appropiate, but a diplomatic one? mostly meaningless. Why support with athletes and profits (economic, political, etc) games if you are against it?

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Thinking more simply, why should we care about the host Beijing's intent? It's just an invitation, not a subpoena. The invited guests are free to come or not, and they can skip the event for whatever reasons, even in short notice.

Beijing is now warning that boycotters will have to pay a price... about what specifically and how? Are they going to counter-boycott the Paris Games 2024? Probably China's full absence is more acceptable or even welcomed :P

I support the decision. Like some other posters have indicated, it should be a complete boycott. China do not deserve to be the center of the the worlds attention, sporting or otherwise.

I'm of the opinion that the Olympics have become a cashgrab and an opportunity for bragging rights. However, while I normally would try to say that events should be separated from politcs, considering that China has thrown the world into chaos with Covid along with some ofther rather concerning claims about China's repeated vioilation of human rights, perhaps this boycott will help China see that they are not infallible.

China should not have been chosen to host the games!!! IOC knew all about the genocide and the human rights abuses before making their decision, but chose it anyway because of the MONEY!!!

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Definitely!

Free Tibet, the Uighurs and remove the 9 dash line BS and we can talk!

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Yes, but it's not enough, make them listen and don't send anyone.

@TARA TAN KITAOKA

Should China cancel the Olympics due to Coronavirus tho? Just like you suggested for Tokyo back then?

South Korea nowhere to be found on such Issues. Not their problem. No need for boycotts or getting on bad terms with China.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

This is American big bullying tactics. Mixing sports with politics is unfair and stupid.

-7 ( +6 / -13 )

The last thing the Olympics needs is the intrusion of divisive politics into an activity whose greatest ambition is to bring people together. But that is the American style, hypocrisy, whining about 'Human rights' while fully supporting one of the most obscene violators of Human rights and perpetrator of Genocidal racist psychopathy on the planet...sigh...

USA number one enemy is China, Russia so hell yes boycott them covid virus pandemic bat eating lovers.

The collapse of Evergrande will set off a chain of events leading to the fall of the murderous CCP.

Simply uninformed. Evergrande is forced to sell its assets and its source of capital has been cut off so they can’t continue to borrow and borrow by the CPC itself.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

100%

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Can mixed be an option?

Yes, in that I don't support the Olympics as a whole and am all for any boycott of them on that grounds, especially during a pandemic. Japan should have had them cancelled too.

No, in that the boycotts themselves are pathetic. It is a bunch of non-affiliated officials boycotting an event they weren't invited to to begin with. If you are going to boycott, either do it all the way (and send nobody) or don't do it at all.

Also No in that I think the given reasons for the boycott are false to begin with.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

If you boycott the Beijing Games then you have no excuse to boycott the Doha FIFA World Cup Games as well. The latter are far worse human rights abusers than Beijing.

I also think that the situation is unfairly focused on China. Compared to what the West does with the Middle East, or India does with Pakistan, China in Xinjiang has done a lot of develop the area and it is mostly focused on the religious side of things.

But personally as long as the West boycotts Doha as well then I am neutral.

11 ( +17 / -6 )

They should never have been given it to begin with, and not supported once they were.

16 ( +23 / -7 )

Funny the question of why China was awarded it in the first place is not offered?

23 ( +27 / -4 )

The Olympics should have been pulled from China due to the actions of its leadership in covering up the leak, perhaps intentional, of the COVID-19 virus from the Wuhan lab. In any case, it is unlikely that China as we know it will exist as a country in 10 years. The collapse of Evergrande will set off a chain of events leading to the fall of the murderous CCP.

21 ( +29 / -8 )

DUH!!! YES! OF COURSE!!!
