Another mindless move on the part of the MAGA (More Anarchy Guaranteed Ahead) lunacy that could bring the world to an economic depression no seen since the 1930s.
Trump understands that trade and economics should be used for geopolitical purposes. But Canada is the biggest exporter of Aluminum to the US (50-60%). And the US trade balance with Canada has been basically balanced when you combine both goods and services. What is he aiming for? That Canada will come begging to become a US state?
As a means to support rules based trading underpinning good faith, fair dealing undoubtably.
To counter practices associated with intellectual property rights and cyber theft, dumping, discriminatory non-tariff barriers, China government 25 percent tariff on cars from the United States,
Forced technology transfer to allow market access, licensing at less than economic value.
Tariffs are just taxes. Amused that Americans want to pay extra taxes on the stuff they buy. Normally governments have to fight tooth and nail to raise taxes by 1%. Trump is lumping huge extra taxes on Americans and his followers are cheering him on. Daft.
What I really want to see is the arrogance of USA bit them hard. I see Trump imposing 25% Tax on their citizen as quick and easy way of the USA becaming irrelevant as a power and losing dominance on the world stage. So I support Trump Tax.
Sadly, I think the US thinks the world relies on us collectively. They'll only put up their own prices. I'm looking forward to NATO allies NOT buying US equipment. We can build and buy our own. Cheaper to boot, and sometimes equal and sometimes better than the U.S. Then we allow the U.S exporters to do the internal communication in the U.S. It's a great way to a) increase defence spending, b) create new jobs, c) increase exports. Even the Saab Gripen, and the French Rafale sell more than the F.35 at a much cheaper cost, with a naval version to boot. Also, the money would stay in said country and not go to the U.S company maintaining their jobs. Finally we would be able to maintain our own geo-political strategy without the fear of Trump or the white house putting pressure on an ally. Let's remember, has the U.S ever entered a war that any European has been involved in post 1945. Let's compare that to the wars we have been involved in with the U.S. I can think of at least 4. Korea, (technically U.N) Vietnam, Iraq1, Iraq2, and Afghanistan, and screwed everyone over. We relied too much on just buying stuff off the shelf from the U.S and hollowed out our industries. I think it was Kissinger who said, To be an enemy of the US is dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal"? Well, that certainly rings true for Ukraine, Afghanistan,Shah of Iran, Taiwan,( accepted the one china policy). Even the French kicked the U.S forces out. The U.S also tried to pressure the U.K during the falklands, until Thatcher told Reagan where to get off.
It will mostly just punish american consumers by pushing up prices, and since I don't live in the US I don't really care, but it seems quite unproductive.
The people who think this is a good idea are the same people who would buy crypto coins without asking questions. When a week worth of groceries for a family of 4 costs 700$ just remember how much cheaper everything was in 2021

It would have to be done intelligently which rules out this administration.

If Nippon Steel takes a 25% share of US steel then do they cancel out?
Fiddlers
so far 33% agree with Trump tariffs which is no surprise as we have plenty on clueless maga fans on this site.

Nobody supports that junk if they have half a brain cell.

Yes. So that prices rise in the USA, and its people realise the mistake they have done to themselves and the world.

The rest of the world will adapt without the US. Once it is done, there is not way back.
Is the US great now or will it take another 24h?

Japan, just buy from Canada.
Problem solved.
