Do you think pandemic fatigue will reduce people's motivation to maintain precautions against the coronavirus?

In Japan I believe we'll divide between those who want to retain masks as common sense/etiquette/manners, and the rest of us.

In Japan, not only pandemic fatigue but also the gov's incredibly stupid handling of it

I was already tired of it before it was cool. And guess what: I'm still alive!

I don't really approve of how the Japanese gov handled it, but I think they handled it much better than most western countries.

People become fatigued quicker if they don't believe in the silly measures they are asked to follow.

Chop and change restrictions too often.

Which restrictions? There have been only requests and each person can decide by themselves if they wish to follow or not.

There has never been any kind of precaution.

Don't enjoy a beverage after 8pm.

Otherwise, pack onto trains at the same time every day, twice a day. If you're over 50, wear your mask on your chin or, if you're feeling particularly conscientious, over your top lip with your nose exposed.

Sit cheek-by-jowl in 27-degree offices with farting, belching ojisans for ten hours, then go home in the same vehicle as a thousand other people and hope for the best.

Pretend it's all over and just do as you are told, my fellow drones.

Derek Grebe above pretty much nailed the idiotic nature and utter inadequacy of the Japanese governments response to the pandemic.

The virus has triggered and turned on an ancient survival mechanism where we become fearful ( distrustful, loathsome, angry, disgusted ) of the ‘other’ who may be carrying unknown disease or pathogen. The ‘other’ unfortunately being EVERYONE else.

Very difficult to turn off once it’s on by the sounds.

I worry that to an already detached and lonely populace , that struggles with authentic communication and connection, this will send them over the cliff psychologically and do irreversible damage. You thought the birthrate was an issue before? People talking to themselves in the street, strange behavior? Connection is a biological imperative to our species. Watch the next decade. In that sense, let the fatigue play out and let’s start working on reconnection and trust.

Enough already!

Yes, but I live a normal life and don't listen to anyone but myself and so far over the last 2 years it worked out very well.

People got tired real quick of this. I remember seeing people in early 2020 wearing gas masks and wearing PPE's during flights. Nowadays, you can't walk more than 5 minutes in public without seeing someone with their mask down or no mask at all. It's understandable! What really grinds my gears are the inconsistencies of authorities when it comes to containing the pandemic. In one hand, we see health authorities discouraging mass gatherings since the start of this, while the tourism and business sectors are encouraging people to begin travelling again at a precarious time (Go To anyone?)

Yes, in general. However, the Japanese have done an exceptional job of doing what needs to be done in terms of mask wearing and getting vaccinated.

Wearing masks among older population was a norm before the pandemic. As for younger generations, they have mostly resumed their normal routines of going to bars and parties masked and unmasked and this will continue as they don't worry as much as the older generations. Before having 6 cases was a big deal, but now with over 250, no one cares...
