Do you think some events at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics should be held in other parts of Japan to cut back on costs, which Tokyo Gov Yuriko Koike is now considering?

They can conveniently blame Koike for this mess.

Hold something up in Sendai. They deserve an economic boost a lot more than Tokyo does.

So will the name change to Japan 2020 from Tokyo 2020? I think there should be some gov't drones sacked for this embarrassment.

Spread the wealth around the country. It will stimulate the whole economy. (Move rowing and canoeing to Osaka. The facility is already built.)

So, is Korea out of the picture then?

Define "remote." Unless they proposed venues in northern Tohoku, Kyushu or Hokkaido, there isn't any place that is all that far from Tokyo.

In this case, 'remote' is defined as anything more than 8km, since Japan put together their proposal for the Olympics saying almost all venues would be within that distance (the exception being cycling, in Shizuoka as far as I recall).

StrangerlandOCT. 25, 2016 - 08:27AM JST Kind of an odd question as I can' t think of any recent summer or winter games that did not have multiple, and is some cases, sites remote from the main stadium and/or Olympic village.

Yeah, but how many of those Olympics were sold to the IOC on not being remote?

Define "remote." Unless they proposed venues in northern Tohoku, Kyushu or Hokkaido, there isn't any place that is all that far from Tokyo. Japan simply isn't that big and there are trains going everywhere. There are facilities in both Saitama and Kanagawa that could be used for events that happen indoors. Probably the biggest problem with contemporary summer games is the idiotic decision to include paddling sports. Rarely does any city hosting the games have natural rapids for these events which means they build artificial sluice ways that are used once and then either sit idle or have to be torn down. There's a good use of money. But otherwise, the Kanto region has sufficient facilities for the rest of the events and none would be remote from Tokyo-shi in the least.

Tokyo promised all this stuff then they are responsible to deliver, why should the rest of Japan pay for it. The should follow the example of London 2012 and build temporary sites for events, such as basketball, that can be dismantled afterwards. What about using existing areas for others events - London used Greenwich Park for equestrian events, Horse Guards Parade for beach volley ball, Lord's Cricket Ground for archery, Eton School for rowing.........

On the one hand, it does sound like a "Well Japan could save money" situation, but really it's TOKYO that could save money, while other prefectures fork it up. Sure, they'll offer some money, but it's going to be local infrastructure etc that'

Sorry, but 3ish years is just not enough time for an All-Japan coordination-mobilization effort. Moreover, I would rather my local tax money be used on something else.

Sad to say, but I'm more in the "You made your bed, now sleep in it" camp.

...then again I do live in Podunk Shikoku :) so not likely we'd have to shoulder any events anyway.

No, the bid was for Tokyo to host the Olympics, and their victory is predicated on that promise. If they feel Tokyo is not up for it, they should pull out entirely, and let it go to the runner up.

The Para Olympic are holding there Track Cycling events at Izu Belladrome. There is no waves in Tokyo so that is held else where ? It was very stupid decision to include Baseball and soccer in a City where the main Summer Sports is Baseball and soccer. They could hold the soccer in Sapporo Muti dome and the rest of Hokkaido. There are plenty of baseball domes around Japan. So they lost the tittle for the compact game. But using exiting structure which are built for the purpose of sport and to be used until unfeasible is eco.

I never could understand the whole idea of the compact games. The Sochi winter games was compact, but that is because the Russians built an entire Olympic style theme park to hold the games, at a tidy cost of $50 billion. If that is what the IOC wants, then good luck with that. As long as the athletes are in Tokyo for the opening and closing ceremonies why do they need to be all in the same area.

Japan should be held to their pledge. They used the fact they could hold all the events in Tokyo as one of their main platforms to secure the games and beat the other countries in the running. However, this was a blatant lie just to get the games. I'm sure the other countries in the running are pretty peeved to be beaten by Japan's lies.

Yes!

If you can't afford the event, make some changes to make it affordable!

I think the marathon should be around Fuji-san

140 kms is a bit long for a marathon but you are right a great dynamic location but in summer its not beautiful, it's covered in trash.

I think the marathon should be around Fuji-san, that would be beautiful. Maybe soccer can be in Osaka or somewhere.

While it goes against what Japan promised (no surprise), if it'll save money then I think they should be staged outside the originally proposed areas, yes. If the government and companies STILL try to collude and jack up costs for construction/repairs in the new areas ("unforeseen costs") then the events should be taken out of the country and put somewhere that is willing to do it for next to nothing in already existing facilities.

2 ( +5 / -3 )

Maybe Tokyo and Japan could pay for the whole event to be staged in an all-round cheaper country. Could be a win-win.

excellent idea.

simple lesson here. don't promise what you can't deliver, you will lose face if you do. Buyers remorse is very expensive in this case

Unfortunately, I fear that the Japanese Olympic Committee will just find someone else to blame for their mishaps.

One wining element of the Tokyo bid was a "compact Olympics", with all events being staged within a 3 kilometer radius. What happened to that? It was also supposed to be "ecological".

The Abe regime lied. They are masters of rhetoric and a lot of hot air.
