Almost no-one smokes on streets here.

I don't often see a smoker where I live.

I'm fine with people smoking outside. What annoys me is when the addicts decide your corner parking space will be their little smoking place (tellingly just out of sight of their office), and proceed to leave butts all over the place. It got so bad our building had to set up no smoking signs to drive them away.

If they can afford it, go for it! Who cares if it's outside!

Definitely bother me and even more when I am walking with my children!

You want to kill yourself, do it at home!!

Who cares, they all pollute with cars, trucks and chemical industry. And I don’t do or own any of that, but let them smell a very little cigarette smoke in return. I guess they can stand that too when they cause the much bigger part already themselves.

Not so much as passive-aggressive comments!

Have never smoked, but somehow the occasional whiff of stale tobacco creates a Proustian memory of childhood.

Not at all. But indoors, annoys me like know many things. I hate going into a place, even for 20 minutes, to come out and have my clothes smelling like I've just rolled over a dead corpse, aka cigarettes smell.

Smoking in general annoys me. But, I don’t think there’s a law against passively annoying me, so that’s that.

When out walking with the dog I often come across people (usually men) standing on their own front steps, smoking and blowing the stink out into the street.

It seems they're not allowed to smoke inside because of the stink/the effect of passive smoke on the kids/the effect on the kids of seeing Dad literally burning money/the effect on the kids of seeing Dad slowly killing himself.

I walk past quickly, holding my breath because I find the stink extremely disagreeable.

Passive smoking on the streets - disgusting.

People who choose to smoke, indoors or outdoors - plonkers.

My parents' generation started smoking when the dangers where not known, when smoking was cool and 'in'. By the time they realised it was deadly and addictive, for many it was too late to stop, they were hooked. It's possible to feel sorry for them. Not many smokers of that generation are still alive today. Anyone smoking today started knowing full well what they were getting themselves into. No excuses. Total plonkers.

Smoking serves no useful purpose.

It annoys you, so there's that.

It doesn’t annoy me, it disgusts me.

11 ( +18 / -7 )

No, but I can sniff it out at quite a distance.

I have no tolerance toward the smell of tabacco smoke, I actually get physically sick when someone smoking walks by I can get a headache and nausea from it really quickly.

I see old school smoking as an antisocial activity these days. It smells terrible. I'm not as opposed to vaping as at least that doesn't smell like a$$.

Not sure if there’s any kind of actual law prohibiting smoking outside of designated areas or while walking or cycling. I still see it on a daily basis so I would assume there isn’t anything other than a few barely noticeable signs on the ground in the arcade (can’t remember if they have them elsewhere), at least nothing as substantial as fines that are enforced. Some convenience stores removed their ashcans but people just toss their butts in the bushes or on the ground. I hate smoking but what can you do if it’s not illegal to smoke outside or, if it is, the rules aren’t being enforced enough?

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

At least they keep it outside now. It must be hard, though, for people getting a big whiff who're trying to quit.

When I smell tobacco smoke outside, I just hold my breath until I'm past it.

Indoors? Yes. Very much so.

Outdoors? No. Not at all.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Over the years because the amount of people smoking has declined the smell becomes an irritant, I always hold my breath as I pass a smoker.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

What about the disgusting habit of just tossing the butt anywhere? streets, parks, and even beaches are fair game for those careless polluters.

Smoking would have to be one of the most selfish vices there is.

I agree with everything you say. But as a former smoker of several decades, I point out that nicotine is very very addictive. And as such it is the basis of much of the behavior you mentioned.

The habit of cigarette smoking needs to treated as the drug addiction that it is.

I never walk behind a smoker without holding my breath. When the wind blows, you can get a hit like from a bong.

At least the smoking section isn’t the next table with an ashtray anymore…

Tokyo (and other cities and towns in Japan) are much too crowded to allow outdoor smoking. JT makes its money, the LDP gets its cut, and everyone's health insurance keeps going up to support their predictably cancerous endings.

I think smoking is the absolute worst. Not to mention the smoke gets into everything from your clothes to your food, it's just nasty, I don't care if you want to smoke privately, go and pollute your lungs all by yourself, but when you are in public there should be a standard and it should be illegal for everyone's safety. I remember back in the day when everyone smoked, we would go to some family restaurant and the waitress would ask us "smoking or non-smoking" as if the smoke will be regulated and confined to one part of the restaurant or the Shinkansen when you had to pass the smoking car, nightmarish memories, but I am at least happy more and more people are understanding the health issues associated with smoking and are trying to limit access or stopping all

my sentiments exactly

Nope. I'd be a hypocrite to say"yes" since I often join them at the "smoking corner" (it's a collection of cigarette vending machines on the street) near the station on the way home after a few on a Friday/Saturday night. Good for meeting people too. I have met some wild people like this ;)

I don't like to be indoors where there's cigarette smoke, or in a cloud directly near the smoker outside, but the faint wispy smell of tobacco smoke is quite pleasant. I especially like the smell of pipe tobacco. Cigars have always stunk to me though...

I especially like the smell of pipe tobacco.

Agreed! All the old fellows back home used to have a pipe, never see them now. It was an elegant way of smoking. Now we have chavs and their vaping.

I don't mind so much if smokers are standing sitting somewhere outside, as I can hold my breath when I walk by. What I dislike is walking behind someone smoking, often for 300-500m as they are walking in the same direction. I try to jog on ahead of them...
