I can tell you what I WON'T be doing -- watching (if I do watch) with the volume on, or watching the news. Lord knows I don't need a thousand "highlights" of whatever Japanese athlete wins a gold, or the excuses when they don't.

Why would I watch something that has been used to cause economic misery for millions of people in Japan?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Gonna watch some e-sports instead.

I the summer, I usually have better things to do than watch TV. Winter Olympics on the other hand, I have some time for.

i don't want to give money to IOC. i don't understand why elected japanese politicians think its a good idea to have the olympics when the majority of their constituents don't want to have them.

It's not really about sport anymore. Added to that, before the pandemic started it was all about Japanese nationalism.

Hoping the USA men’s 4 x 100 m reIay will defeat Japan.

also will Katie Ledecky perform as a human Secretariat

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I would bet that 90% of the people that said no, will watch the games.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Definitely not this time and not until the current IOC system has been put down and reformed.

I know 2 people who have qualified to compete this time - if the thing actually goes ahead.

I will watch those 2 events only, and nothing else.

I'm someone who would otherwise be booking holidays off work and watching as much of it as I could, but this whole fiasco has really left a bad taste in the mouth.

The whole thing should be cancelled, and one of the people due to compete feels the same - but she has sponsors to satisfy and ultimately a living to make so feels that she doesn't actually have a choice.

No. Nvere had any interest in Olympics ever. Don't have a TV. Don't have smartphones. Only have a desk top and lap top in our home. A couple of hours each evening when we are in the house we watch MASH, Steptoe and Son, Are You Being Served, All in the Family, and other comedy shows on Dailymotion, Bitchute, or Youtube.

We are pretty active hikers, fishers, and campers in our fam. Including the MIL and FIL.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Maybe. It depends on what events will be offered on TV. I normally only watch a couple of Winter events just to get the highlights and final results.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

What?! You mean to tell me that awarding medals to 14-year-old girls in leotards for twirling a hula-hoop isn't worthwhile to leer at as a sporting event??

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Streaming services and my DVD collection will see me through the Olympics - winter Olympics are something different... I sit glued to them :)

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Nope, maybe once they stop politicizing the games I will think about it.

What about 'freedom of speech". Or for the far right does that only include things like revenge porn

Not much, and none with a Japanese commentary if I can help it.

I was planning to go and see the road cycling in person somewhere near Mt. Fuji, but won't go now. It's probably the only chance I'll ever get in my life to see top pros again, but that doesn't matter. I'll still watch it on tv or a stream, just to see what the roads are like as a recce and motivation for going and riding it myself. I ride about 5,000km a year, so its a big part of my life. I'll probably watch the cross country mountain biking for the same reason.

Watching the Olympics and its empty stadiums and phony enthusiasm is about as pointless as voting in a U.S. election.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

I'll watch the opening ceremony because I am curious to see what it will look like with 180 countries' athletes marching into an almost empty stadium. Maybe there will be fake crowd sound effects like some countries did at sporting events last year.

I am also curious to see what kind of entertainment spectacle organizers will put on. Before the pandemic, I had heard a report that a fake meteor shower from satellites in space would have been produced over the stadium. It would have been interesting to see the entertainment and presentation of Japanese culture. I'm sure there will be something but considerably scaled back.

No. Olympics suck.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

If it's showing something I want to see, when I want to see it and I have no other viable alternatives, I may watch. If not I'll be happy with highlights.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

I don't watch not because I don't want or I boycott Olympic or whatever else, but because I don't have a tv.

what's the purpouse of owning a tv in a country with 8 (eight) channels filled by commercials about beer ?

The coverage is laughably bad and entirely Japan-centric, so I think I'll pass.

excuse me sir, what do you pretend they show in Japan during Olympic games, Luxemburg or Equador or Brunei related results ? lol

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

Absolutely not.*

*exception may be made for certain women's volleyball competitions

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

I have never had any interest in sports of any kind all my life. I go out of my way to avoid them on television. The Olympics have always been a great time to catch up on reading or movies.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

> I’ll never watch anything Olympic related again in my life, televised or in person.

Ditto.

Anyway, I don't watch J TV anyway

4 ( +5 / -1 )

I don't usually see the games on purpose, previously it was inevitable when people depended so much on open TV, but thanks to streaming services this is not an issue now. The games lost their appeal to me a long time ago when the reality of the political and economic deals involved became too obvious to ignore.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

I will watch it on tv ... it has always been like this ... I find it unfair that they are done in covid circumstances, many people will be disappointed (sports ... business ... fans.etc) for me it would take place in 2024 and in Tokyo.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Ill watch some, I do prefer the Winter Games though. I want to see the coverage and the sites around Tokyo. I miss Japan, can't wait to get back there. Praying for this virus to run its course and be behind all of us....

Will we have a choice? Have to agree with @MrKipling 5:57pm:

- “Unless you unplug your TV for the entire length of the Olympic games. They will be shown on all stations, reruns of someone you've never heard of doing their best and getting 28th place in a sport you didn't know was a sport. ... gets a gold medal! How many times will we have to see that?” -

What’s worse will be the endless weeks and months of the morning shows, the midday shows, the evening variety shows, the comedy-dorama cameos, and of course, the persistent and never-ending parade of CM’s and endorsements.

- “Come to think of it, unplugging/[trashing] the TV maybe the best idea!” -

gods! Save us from this seemingly endless hell!

7 ( +7 / -0 )

You all will! Unless you unplug your TV for the entire length of the Olympic games.

They will be shown on all stations, reruns of someone you've never heard of doing their best and getting 28th place in a sport you didn't know was a sport. God help us if a Japanese athlete or Naomi Osaka gets a gold medal! How many times will we have to see that?

Come to think of it, unplugging the TV maybe the best idea!

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Nope, maybe once they stop politicizing the games I will think about it.

-4 ( +8 / -12 )

I'll be watching on NBC. Loads of events on simultaneously. Not just US centric.

Actually quite looking forward to it.

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

The coverage is laughably bad and entirely Japan-centric, so I think I'll pass.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

I used to watch the 100m sprint finals.

Don’t think I’ll bother this time around.

I’ll never watch anything Olympic related again in my life, televised or in person.

Me too. I've gone from being a moderate summer/winter Olympics watcher in 2012 to vehemently opposed to every aspect of this corporate takeover of cities/countries we see now. Thanks Shinzo, thanks John Coates, thanks Seb Coe, Toyota, Coca-Cola, MacDonalds, NBC and all the rest.

25 ( +26 / -1 )

Don't have a TV, so no. I sold mine ages ago because it just wasn't worth the hassle. No programmes of interest and sick and tired of the NHK idiots knocking on my door.

15 ( +18 / -3 )

Watch on TV, but not a chance in Hell I would attend in person.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

Just because I disagree with the timing of this thing, does not mean that I will refuse to watch it.

-5 ( +8 / -13 )

TV programs on sports suck, as there are fewer serious expert analyses for performance outcomes, predictions or athletes.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Maybe against, but if the Olympics do take place, it will be practically impossible to avoid any interraction with the media. Furthermore, once it starts, that patriotic feeling will come in to want to see how one's country, nationals are competing.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

Sure, why not? After all, we are all paying for it lol.

-13 ( +16 / -29 )

Yeah, why not.

It comes only once every four years, I feel I owe it to the athletes who have worked hard to get here.

There are a lot of countries out there that I really like and hope to see do well.

And it beats a lot of the garbage that is on TV and streaming now.

-21 ( +20 / -41 )

I’ll never watch anything Olympic related again in my life, televised or in person.
