Now that the Paralympics have ended, are you glad that Japan went ahead and hosted them and the Olympics?

Of course no

The Olympics represented a triumph of capitalist greed over Japan's wellbeing. Now we have another "Olympics" to deal with, namely the regaining the nation's health. There will be a lot of casualties in the fight against the pandemic but no medals and cheering crowds.

Look, when we got the hosting, the first pricing was absolutely astronomical. Someone thought they could just get away with it. Only after a public outcry did the price come down to a fraction (almost, you know what I mean) of what it was first. However, even so, this is a one-time event and the total cost spent on building all sorts of things will not be recouped. Even stadiums of this size will not be fully utilized in the future and so this is throwing money out the window. And in the case of Japan, there is another problem - absolutely no other plan. Everyone is focused on a specific date, but not on what happens after that. And then the amount that was related to the operation. For example, the affair about the food that was thrown away, etc.

Most of the host countries already have sufficient venues before the Olympics, and yet they are building new venues that will then go empty anyway.

Hard "No".

Unquestionably NO!!!!

Ditto the above responses: A 'NO' that is harder than diamond.

Look, Japan did a great job under the circumstances. Be proud of that.

There is nothing that can give me the will to put the Olympics/Paralympics above the freedoms enjoyed by keeping the coronavirus at bay.

The J government just rammed it through regardless of what the public thought or wanted. They played the dice and were lucky that there were no super spikes (that we know of yet). But why would they take chances with the well-being of the population for a few week of limelight.

Great job - all considering. Watched a fair bit of both via OBS coverage which really was very good.

All the effort and resources that were focused on the Olympics were effort and resources that were not being focused on battling Covid.

Supporting struggling businesses, concentrating on meaningful test/tracing, encouraging telework - these are all things that took a back seat to pushing Sports Day through regardless.

I am a sportsman. I love Olympics. Unfortunately, The Tokyo 2020 Olympics hit a bump on the road where Covid-19 and people's health and safety were a lot more important than playing some games.

IOC is like a mafia and countries have to sign contracts where IOC makes all the major decisions, regardless of the circumstances of the countries.

Tokyo / Japan had little say in cancelling the games.

Plus, holding the Games now are very expensive.

Definitely NO.

HELL NO!

It was supposed to be like that. Preparation was made and now it's clear but not clean. Some human life has been damaged. Japan had to go through this rough situation. This will be forgotten slowly over the years, in fact the world doesn't even care because most of the people doesn't even know the start and end of Tokyo Olympics.

what a loaded question !

How much longer are you going to feed the anti-Olympics mob’s rage !?

we’ve had to put up with their whining & complaining for months now. It’s over & done with now, so let’s move on

I wasn't even glad when we were awarded the Olympics.

-1 ( +8 / -9 )

Yep,

A little ray of sunshine in the ludicrous situation the world finds itself in!

While it was a nice short-term distraction from the current global pandemic situation, that's literally all it was. A short-term distraction. A very costly short-term distraction which will cost Japan both financially and from a COVID recovery perspective. Short-term gain for long-term loss.

Yes, and I am not surprised at all that most voted no. These people would vote regardless just to spite Japan.

Look at all the amazing world records and performances at the games. Glad it happened.

It was like a BBQ on a cold rainy day without friends and alcohol, and with a week of running nose afterwards.

How much did the stadium actually cost to build after the redesign? Wondering if it even saved any money at all.

Thousands & thousands of athletes from all over the world have been preparing their whole life for this. I, for one, am glad they got the chance which they have been dreaming about since forever.

This Olympics had nothing to do with sports, it had only capitalism, corruption and personal interests involved. very sad Olympics.

John

Some of you are so pessimistic....it’s really terrible that you all live in perpetual fear of...well it seems like everything.

"Everything"?

That's hardly true. But the Coronavirus? There's value in being afraid of things that can kill you, especially things that can do so, unseen. That would encourage you to take appropriate action to protect yourself against the virus - vaccinations, masking, et al.

You might be okay with the govt taking a roll of the dice with your life. I'm not so cavalier.

Yes - now we can stop hearing about them

Anyway, what’s done is done.
