Not a third choice here: Hell No !

SS are attention whores, pirates and terrorists all in one. These guys seriously need to be curbed!

12 ( +14 / -2 )

I don't pay criminals to be criminals.

10 ( +18 / -8 )

Financing their anti-whaling campaign, which is just a euphemism for paying for jackass Watson's legal bills...

10 ( +14 / -4 )

I'm going to +1 to the "Hell no!" - that was my first reaction

9 ( +13 / -4 )

I don't support whaling, and I don't support eco-terrorism even more.

9 ( +13 / -4 )

Why would I donate to support piracy? Because that's what their actions amount to on the high seas.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

No money from here either, there are other worthy organisations that I will give money to.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

As I posted elsewhere. They also need to pay well over $500 k to Peter Bethune.

It's an expensive time to be in the SS.

I didn't expect to see ALL pro-whaling posts here. Could one of you please explain why you dislike the Sea Sheperd so much?

I'm afraind you got some thumbs down, rather than an answer, because you assumed all previous posters are "pro-whaling" which they are clearly not. Posts 1,2, and 4 give no clue as to the posters feelings about whaling. Number 5 could fairly be considered pro, but posts 3 appears anti-whaling.

Many people, myself, BertieWooster, etc. oppose whaling, but dislike SeaSheperd and their dangerous tactics and shameful history of lying, as well.

Does that make sense and answer your question? If you genuinely wish to know why many people, regardless of where they fall on the spectrum on feelings about whaling, dislike Sea Shepherd, a read of their Wikipedia entry should clear that up.

CardinalRed: Well stated!

7 ( +10 / -3 )

it's like asking to donate to the al-qaeda...

7 ( +11 / -4 )

What surprises is the result ratio considering we have some strong SSCS supporters here.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Right on, cardinal, right on! Not a yen for those knuckleheads. Mmmm, they make me hungry for some good whale meat.

4 ( +12 / -8 )

Agreed that most people are anti-whaling but do not support the methods of SS "protest" against it. There are better more effective ways to prevent whaling using diplomatic pressure etc.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Here's my donation: Whale bacon. (it tasted great when I was in Hokkaido!)

2 ( +10 / -8 )

Whaling and militant anti-whaling are as bad as one another.

2 ( +8 / -6 )

More than "diplomatic efforts also rely on coercion. I prefer advertising, and other promotional educational programs with real (not outrageous, questionable, or hysterical) information about: the cost/tax burden of maintaining the industry, mercury dangers, and possibly global public opinion, to get the general pubilc to oppose their own government.

The asshattery of SS simply hardens the stance of those who wish to stand up to external pressures.

SwissToni, "negotiated settlement" with who or between whom?

Are you referring to Japan remaining withing the IWC, unlike Norway, Canada, etc., and other countries who simply walked away from the anti-whaling whaling body?

Or are you thinking of something else?

As for the silent majority, my thinking (just based on living, working, and playing here for a couple decades - no actual research or surveys) is that the silent majority doesn't give a thought to the issue. Anymore than they think about the availability or propriety of quail meat.

I was first served whale in the early 90s. It was rare to see in an izakaya (at least in Tokyo) then and only one in our group (the girl who ordered it) had eaten it before. A few months later, I was served it at someone's house. Then nothing for a decade and now it seems to be not uncommon at all. People's curiosity has been piqued. It seems to me, that more people are trying it. And for that, I blame Sea Shepherd, more than I credit any marketing by any whaling body.

1 ( +2 / -1 )

lol why? no thank you! -__-

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Which are you?

Just giving a bit of money and doing nothing else. Does that make you an activist or is just a feel good gesture for your mind?

What else are doing to protect the environment, not drive a car or similar.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

No, I just hide my local supermarkt's whale meat in the poultry section.....

1 ( +1 / -0 )

So,.....I've got 5 "bad" clicks now and all I did was ask someone to explain why they think the Sea Shepard deserves the negative opinion. Obviously, there is some hidden agenda in these responses.

Watson and Sea Shepherd have just paid Peter Bethune to drop his suit for ordering him to sink the boat "Ady Gill". Your contributions have made this possible. Now they need to settle with Mr Ady Gil himself who is out one $5,000,000 boat and also suing Watson and Sea Shepherd. Send in your hard earned money right now!

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Taj, you may be right but only to point. Sea Shepherd are a symptom of the failure of the authorities to find a negotiated settlement. While you will always get those that take a vocal hard line stance, many in Japan are simply embarrassed by the country's position. Even with the little meat coming in from the research and imports, the whale meat market continues to shrink. The silent majority are voting with their wallets.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Well Taj, we'll have to just disagree. The negotiated settlement I refer to is to respect the spirit of the moratorium and the majority of the members of the IWC rather than leverage pork barrel diplomacy and legal loopholes. But you know that.

In my almost 30 year relationship with Japan and its people I'd say I've met many more who think the situation is ludicrous and a waste of resources than have had their curiosity peaked, or are angry with Sea Shepherd. The market is the final arbiter though and auctions don't attract buyers and retail sales continue to fall.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Just about to order my new Sea Shepherd T-shirt and Towel. While i'm at it, I will be leaving a nice donation.

Whalers and whaling supporters, history will remember you. Now that we have the internet, it will remember you by name.

And your family in the future will be ashamed that you associated with the killing of Cetaceans.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Why don´t Sea Shepherd save endangered whales?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Already three negative marks and no explanation. Gees! Just trying to understand the issue here.

-3 ( +5 / -8 )

So far 9 donators and 51 nos. if this ratio were maintained SS will do very well.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Moral support, yes.

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

I'm not sure you're right when it comes to effectiveness. Diplomatic efforts have had no effect on Japan's whalers at all, ever, let alone since the moratorium. Essentially SS gets the support it does because of all the years of prevarication. Dislike them if you will but here's no denying their effectiveness.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Wow! So much negativity. I especially like the comments about disliking whaling and disliking SS. So, what are you doing to protect the whales of the earth?

I donate to SS and have done for nearly a decade. Somebody has to do something to protect the environment. SS does a lot more than just harass the Japanese whalers. There are only two types of people in this world. There are activists or inactivists. Which one are you?

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

My support, yes, my money, no.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

I didn't expect to see ALL pro-whaling posts here. Could one of you please explain why you dislike the Sea Sheperd so much?
