Should there be an age limit for driving licenses?

There is no age limit to cognitive clarity.

There are university professors and other professionals who continue competently in their line of work until their demise.

The demographics that show the highest ratio in car accidents is young males under 25.

Should we then also limit driving licences to that category of people?

Sounds like a good idea to me. For that matter, raise the age for a motorbike licence to 30.

I don’t think so, if you’re a good driver and you have all of your skills, facilities and coordinations are intact, then it should be up to you and ok to drive.

Yes. My mother drove until 89 years but the limit should be 80 years. Testing at 75 years.

The highest group in the accidents are old people then young teenagers. Increase driving license to 20 years.

In large cities, yes. In the vast countryside, no, but with testing every 3 months.

Of course, "case by case" is most fair, but how to make that a reality?

My grandmother drove all her life until she was about 90 without an accident or being given any speeding tickets. However, she always had been in good mental and physical shape, so much of this determining whether this one should drive or that one should drive should depend more on testing mental and physical reflexes than just age.

imho, shorter validity for high-risk groups, and the retest should be more than just watching a video. I just got my license, everything I learn at driving school, I never see practiced on the road by other drivers. The driving school system is just a joke, a money scam.

By definition, you drivers will be less experienced that older drivers, as well as suffering from immaturity. Even if you raised the age at which people start driving, they will still be inexperienced when they start driving. Elderly drivers do not have the excuse of inexperience on their side - they are just dangerous.

It definitely should. Cars sometimes become killer for pedestrians or other drivers. I don't want elders to be a criminal of the traffic accident. We need courage not only to step forward, but also to step back or give up something.

Definitely not based on age alone. That would be discrimination against the majority of safe drivers over 70 or 75, just for the sake of those poor drivers who need to be weeded out some other way.

You seem to have forgotten that this question relates to driving in Japan, and your statistics clearly are from another country, probably the U.S. Teenagers are definitely NOT the highest risk group here in Japan.

I would say no, but since it seems that most elderly drivers aren't voluntarily taking themselves off the road when it's time, someone needs to do it for them.

And once again, the question is about elderly drivers, not teen drivers, so how many accidents teens get into is irrelevant. Bring your stats about teen drivers when there's an article about young drivers.

I'm an elderly driver of 79 years of age. I'm in excellent mental as well as physical health; in athletic condition and still play tennis with 20 year old University tennis team members and do quite well; have run 3 hour marathons but now just take long walks with my wife; swim regularly in our pool; lift weights daily, etc ...

Here in California we are required to take a written test every 4 years. I have and continue to do so with perfect scores; completed my doctorate studies in mathematics; did research in computer science for 20 years at a major university, etc ... . I look forward to a driving test. I think that happens when I'm 83.

My wife is younger and an excellent driver as well as an observant critic. When she decides I should no longer drive, then I'll happily give up the wheel and enjoy being the rider with a free chauffeur.

When we are both not capable of driving safely, then there are plenty of public transit possibilities. And, as long as we can walk, the local markets are only 30 minutes from our home. A nice stroll.

The point is that there are no absolutes here; no age limits. We are all different. And yes, caution is important. The highways are loaded with maniacs here; drunk drivers and for some reason courtesy has gone by the wayside.

There's no reason to have an age limit. Implementing eye/hearing and motor skills testing for all would weed that out.

With the outrageous amount of elder folks, the public transportation is sensational in Japan. Theirs no need to run the risk of causing an accident. As the population continues to decline, the protection of the community is important for our future. If action isn’t taken and is disregarded, it will only continues to get much worse.
