Well, a World Cup is not only supposed to exhibit the customs and the traditions of the country in which it is held in. Rather, it is a mosaic of of all countries which participate in it. Thus, i would prefer to hear the football chant of the enthusiastic Greek, English, Brazilian, etc fans than this irritating bee-like noise. In South Africa team matches....go ahead. But in other matches, i don't see any reason of why should we hear the Vuvuzelas.

I apologize for my ignorance but can someone explain what a vavazela is? I really have never heard of one till right now. My first impression is a Dr.Suess thingamajig or something like that.

Don't worry, obviously you either don't watch World Cup matches, or you haven't noticed a bee-like noise coming from them. Vuvuzela is a type of plastic blowing horn that produces a loud (and irritating) noise. It is used by football fans in the stadiums of South Africa.

It's good adding ethnic mood in the game but surely annoying for watchers and players both.

It was weird at first, but now I don't mind the sound at all. It's their way, let them have it. They'd probably boycot the games if they banned it. I would.

They should be banned.

Most teams that have a chance of winning the WC are good because they communicate well on the field, the large amount of low-scoring games and underdog-win games must have some link to this- they can't communicate on the pitch because they can't hear each other.

Absolutely not! What arrogance!

I voted yes in a fit of rage but now that the televisions off I don't so much mind them. Let the crazy South African people blow all they want, not like anybody can stop them at this point. However, keep the bloody things out of the baseball stadium!

I voted yes because I hate the damn things. But I'd much rather FIFA did something about the attrocious incompetance of many of its referees than waste time on the vuvuzela problem.

Now that really does sound like somebody trying to find a good excuse for bad football.

I was talking with a South African friend about two hours ago, someone in need of a TV, he tells me these things (vuvuzelas) have only been use for about the last seven years. They are not, as some have claimed, some plastic variation of a Zulu tradition. Quite simply they are audio war fare. Just listen when a member of the team they don’t support gets any where near scoring, that is just not cricket is it?

I voted for keeping them, but then I hate football and these things just make the ridiculous even more ridiculous.

Chris, I am trying to see if I can send money to support the vuvuzelas big band (12 to 15,000) players of South Africa who do special performances for second rate football teams who need that little extra encouragement. I think England fall into that category. Do Marks and Spenser’s do earplugs? Earplugs may not be the must attractive of accessories but they might be your only answer. By the way who are your team playing?

They're not that annoying.

How can anyone be visiting this site and not claim to know what a vuvuzela is? It's all over the news.

I voted keep them, part of South Africa.

Never mind footie, they should be banned from planet earth. You know, round every last one of them up and launch them into space. Crowd noise effects the ebb and flow of a game.

You saying that you hate football shows that you don't care and you're "trying to find a good excuse" for saying it's boring.

You can see on the pitch that they can't hear each other. Maybe you should actually WATCH a game before commenting. Have you seen any of the data on the noise these things make?

Yes I have, I forget what it was but I was really surprised, mind blowing isn’t it?

I have little option but to watch, this religious rite has taken over the world and for me the only saving grace has been the vuvuzelas, they really have rubbed so many up the wrong way and in the process shown just how ridiculous this whole thing as become. I am sorry if you are one of those that gets passionate about sport, but for me it is a game and of very little importance yet there is near enough no way of avoiding it. All I see is an incredible amount of money and hype and a great many people being gullibly sucked into that. Forgive me for finding that ridiculous and feeling a need to have a little fun with it.

They should allow them to be used at the games only until July 11. The ban on vuvuzelas at World Cup soccer games should start on July 12.

According to this link, they come in somewhere between a jet taking off and a jackhammer...

Not only should they be banned, but anyone caught with one should be slapped upside the head with it.
