Definitely held in some form. The world needs it.

They'll be cancelled- the virus is raging all over the world and we still haven't seen the second wave or what its going to do

Japan and Tokyo gov already said they want the Olympics to go ahead. I don’t think coronavirus situation will have any effect for them to walk back on their words.

The LAST true PANDEMIC killed 100 million people over three years. We are only at the beginning. In a year, the world population will be devastated. There will not be enough will to run an Olympics when so many people cannot get together for anything.

Too early to say for sure, but I am leaning towards them either being held in a drastically reduced form or cancelled altogether. Unfortunately the "miracle recovery" scenarios have failed to materialize and don't look likely and a vaccine, even if developed, likely won't have been widely distributed in time to make a difference.

It is possible though that a treatment for the disease that drastically reduces its mortality might be in use by then, which would allow enough "normalcy" to return for the games to go ahead.

Actually Japan will have a historic gold medal win of 100% in all categories because no foreigners are allowed to enter Japan.

Apart from the Tokyo and national governments, does anyone even care anymore?

The Olympics will run without a doubt next year Japan will easy over come the virus

There's still a year to go. A vaccine may be possible; if one exists, you'd better believe the IOC will be near the front of the line.

If there is a vaccine or cure it would be nice to have them.

The athletes need to train so they could postpone them until October.

They could start them on October 11th which is Taiiku No Hi.

The days are numbered for having all events in one place

3 ( +3 / -0 )

There will likely be some type of event. Japan will probably get some input on events that will be displayed and the 16day event may turn into a 32 day event to host as many events as possible. Also likely a very minimalistic affair with fewer media personnel, support staff, and higher reliance on Video Assisted Refereeing.

Doubling the length of Tokyo 2021 to a month would be more costly and really stretch the resources and volunteers. Furthermore, I doubt TV networks will devote 1 month to Olympics, when Beijing 2022 is just 6 months around the corner. Olympic overload.

I hope a vaccine is in place within 6 months from now and the Games go ahead in reduced format. Sadly, I dont think the performances would be world class if there are no international comps in the months leading up to Tokyo.

even if let's say the vaccine or a cure is invented (and assuming that it does work) within this second half of the year, how long would you suppose it would take before the bureaucrats and oligrachs would allow the rest of the world to mass produce a vaccine and distribute it to the rest of the global population while containing the spread of the CV-19? I still believe that an a**pull-like miracle could still happen but a lot of economies would probably be not in a condition to support non-essential stuff like sports events.

I don't really care. They are bread and circuses for those who need a good cheer for nationalism posed as "sport".

I dunno if that’s true for everyone. Some like looking at medal tables and crap like that but you can just enjoy the sports.

I liked Sergey Bubka when I was a kid.

If cancelled it will be the second time the Olympics games to be held in Tokyo to be cancelled.

The first was the 1940 Tokyo Olympics games cancelled by the war .

The world needs it.

The world needs it like it needs another pandemic.

Either that or because no foreigners will want to enter Japan.

I don’t think it will go on. Even so if it did continue, who will come?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

James, remember the Olympics are "international ". And to the others saying to postpone the games to October. Remember the winter Olympics start February 2022!

The games will have to be cancelled because the pandemic will still be worldwide even if vaccines are discovered. The most expensive games that never happened.

The US infection rate shows no sign of slowing down and the people show no sign of care. If the Olympic continues, would Japan discriminate against the US ? The politics involved will be a nightmare, might as well cancel it.

The Olympics should be on hold until we get the situation under control with this Pandemic. When it's safe again the Olympics can resume. People might not come if they don't feel safe to begin with.
