if so many people complain of having pains in wrists and back from being seated at a desk using a conventional computer for extended periods, how bad will it be being hunched over an ipad?

0 ( +0 / -0 )

It wouldn't be so bad if you could actually do something useful with it, like launching Office etc. But with Apple's stupid restrictions it's just a glorified gimmick, it's in fact just a larger iPhone without phone and camera.

lol...a typical statement by someone who obviously doesn't use one! Spend enough time with it and you can do some amazing stuff with it. If you think it's just a gimmick, then yeah, it's obviously not for you. And if you're still using a 6 year old projector, then ask your boss to stop being a tightwad and get a NEW ONE!! Jeez, it's not rocket science!

I like the device I just hate the users

I think it is cool. I love my iPhone. Waiting for the next generation to see what they add.

Convenient to carry for one.

I believe that's why they invented the laptop case. One of the gentlemen I supervise got one and constantly has it tucked under his arm, makes it difficult to do coffee runs.

Presentations, emails, slide shows, browsing photos on a decent sized screen, watching movies, listening to music, gaming, internet, telephone calls, ease of use.

So basically it does everything a laptop does...but poorly. I'd agree that it's just a big iPhone but you'd look even more like a fool if you placed it near your head. Plus, for whatever reason, the thing throws a fit whenever it hooks up to a projector made before 2004 in addition to the fact it's not office compatible and it doesn't have proper applications for heavy duty financial applications and it's security systems are subpar at best. I simply have no use for the thing, maybe if it ran windows programs, had a bioscanner produced by a reputable company, and was compatible with some of the better ERP software it would be more viable but as it stands it does not so it isn't.

And until you've actually tried doing the work you think is not possible on the iPad, your comment is as much use as a chocolate fireguard!

I operate by observing others, those at my work that do have the little trinket have largely stopped using it unless they want to use it for entertainment purposes, something I don't indulge in at work, for the reasons I stated above. It is not suitable for my line of work. It's a manner of preference and necessity, I simply have no want or need of it. No need to get offended.

The iPad is great if you think the future is about everyone carrying a 0.73 kg data device everywhere they go.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Yeah, they are a great device although, for some people they are a flamboyant toy. But, for many people they are an essential part of everyday life and business. I have a new iPod touch, which fills the 'void' in my technology needs.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

TheQuestion: Does it fill a void? YES! Convenient to carry for one. Is it necessary for anything? YES! Presentations, emails, slide shows, browsing photos on a decent sized screen, watching movies, listening to music, gaming, internet, telephone calls, ease of use. And until you've actually tried doing the work you think is not possible on the iPad, your comment is as much use as a chocolate fireguard!

Obviously the iPad bashers have never bothered to use one! I use mine to do presentations, slide shows, schedule keeping, internet use, email and even as a phone! Big and bulky? Not at all! It sure as hell beats carrying a laptop to the office or to my client's office, unless I really need to. And why would people be "wrestling with them on trains"? An oversized newspaper I can understand, but the iPad is no bigger than a decent sized book! And, BURAKUMINDES, to shrink it down to the size of an iPod defeats the purpose of having a larger screen and the functions it can perform! Here's my palm - please slap yourself with it! Netbooks don't even come close to the iPad, are a lot more bulky and generally have crappy battery life! The convenience, comfort and ability to do many tasks virtually anywhere are what sold me on it! 75% of users who voted 'No' probably can't get their heads around the fact that something so simple, is so much better than other alternatives on the market, or the fact that the iPad is an absolutely awesome device that can absolutely be used in the working environment!

Does it fill a void? No Is it necessary for anything? No Is it cool? I'll give it that.

I'd break the thing inside a day though and it's just not compatible with any of the work I do, I'll stick with my Getac.

I am with acuteandchronic.

Why buy 2 devices that need to be synchronised when one can do it all.

@BurakuminDes.

Appeal for the Ipad is the big screen, shrink the size and how big will the virtual keyboard be?

One reason why netbook's suffer as their keyboards are too small and uncofortable for anything more than messaging, etc. Ditto for screen-size gets harder to read and less likely to shown to clients, etc.

Yeah the portable devices got smaller but still got the same probs as the early laptop, bulky and heavy pheripherals like power transformers, Mouse(if you want), etc

in other words for 75% them grapes are pretty sour

0 ( +0 / -0 )

They are too big and bulky in my opinion. I've seen commuters on trains wrestling with the things - it's almost comical watching people use them! Kind of like the old brick-shaped mobile phones of the early 90s. Hopefully Apple can, with improved technology, shrink them down to say the size of an iPod. Then I'd consider getting one.

(correction - Gigabyte TouchNote)

In other words, why would I want a tablet and a separate PC when I can have both functions in one device? Or why would I buy an iPad, when I can have a Lenovo IdeaPad or a Gigabyte TouchPad, either of which has far more capability overall?

Love mine, especially for business. An example from this morning: I was able to pull up a fairly obscure document for a client to have a look at, and then email a copy to his phone and to his office. Sounds pretty simple, until you realize that all this happened while we were walking from our cars to a meeting on the 10th floor of a building. Could not have done that with a laptop - they aren't something you can walk around and use. Mine has replaced my laptop. I use my proper computer for any major data entry and actual computing, and the ipad for everything that requires portability.

How about a netbook with a touchscreen that flips round? These can be used like tablets when you're on the move, and like a notebook when you're sitting down. To my mind, this is a much more practical design, as current virtual keyboards are not up to performing tasks that require heavy typing. Several are available, and some of them are quite cheap.

lol, I've neever seen a poll so one sided on this site.

JapanHusker: "LOL. 72% say "no" to the iPad. Initial sales disagree..."

Indeed.

Zenny11: To say iPad will replace the computer is a bit strange, I agree. But I think iPad-LIKE devices will replace them for the most part. This of course means that the tech will adapt. I doubt they will COMPLETELY replace computers, though, much like the laptop has not completely replaced the desktop. I agree with your point that things will be more integrated, though. Hell, it's already happening and has been happening for a while. Look at iPhone.

i have one and love it, find it much more useful than my laptop, however neither question in this survey is very useful. Its a great device but filling a void is a bit over the top and as others have pointed out pretty much all gadgets are not necessary.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

I think rather than the Ipad replacing the PC, we will rather see more integrated devices like TV with PC functions, recorders, integrated game-consoles.

While not a perfect example; In my home we got 2 Digi TV's, 2 PC's and some game-consoles(soon to grow), etc. The 2 Digi TV's are the main access/viewing point for all of those, keyboards, etc are all going to be wireless. Check your Digi-Tv how many HDMI jacs, D4 jacks, D-Sub 15 jacks, etc it got.

New PC's that got Tv-tuners build in, Stuff like "Torne" which will turn your PS3 into a Tv-tuner and a HD recorder for Blue-ray, etc will all more and more merge into one device.

Ditto for mobile devices that will more smoothly integrate with your home devices than right now. Ipad is just one step but it like the Iphone is STILL a Mini-PC with Cel and wireless functions added in as an afterthought and I see smart-phones getting bigger and replacing them.

Just my view.

It's revolutionary but I will not buy one because I have the iphone.

But 6-8 years from now. I can see this type of computer replacing desktop and laptop computers.

Wishful thinking: I would rather see a cure for cancer or a flying leviating car but that's asking to much. So i will settle for a tablet replacing the desktop computer or laptops.

LOL. 72% say "no" to the iPad. Initial sales disagree...

If you're a first-year medical student at Stanford University, it's essential as all of your textbooks are on the iPad. If you're using it to surf the internet, not so essential. Obviously the question needs more choices as there is a gradation between usefulness and useless.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Waiting for the next version. Still, you could argue that ANY gadget is useless, ultimately. It depends on who uses it and how, of course. I know people who STILL don't have cell phones, and friends without TVs.

Having an iPhone as well, I don't mind waiting to buy an iPad -- while I know there are differences, of course, it seems gratuitous to own both. But regardless if this 'gadget' is useful or not at the moment, it's going to be a basis for some pretty necessary technology in the future (some of which, of course, has already been worked on before iPad).

I bought one to use in the U.S. when I am home since it is contract-free. It's pretty good, the next 1-2 versions will be outstanding I am sure.

These are the only options?
