By definition, if you need a machine to think for you, you are no longer a human being. I'm in IT and apps have made the problem worse not better. Amplifying that will just make that worse. Also at the same time unemploy people to keep up skills. Which will then in turn in the long run will remove the ability of people to do roles they formerly could think in as their brains atrophy.

AI is a stupid thing to make. Just because we can make AI doesn't mean we should. It only serves the corporate interest, who will in turn become AI's themselves.

Progress turns out was for corporations and computers, not for people.

Assuming they don't wipe us "a la Matrix (movie) mode" out of existence, chances are more people get fatter and lazier.

How?

No. Not unless it somehow curbs idiots from breeding and improves the gene pool.

If used correctly can be a help too humanity, such as the space program. Where we can send probes places that are too dangerous for humans. We just need to be careful how we use this technology.

What does 'better' mean?

Or, in the sense that the AI becomes better, people do not.

More AI and more news items about how YOU are going to lose your job, livelihood and inclination to do things for yourself and people do not do anything about it: I think it shows just how pathetic many people have become.

Better= good

What is Humanity ...?

Humanity is the human race, which includes everyone on Earth. It's also a word for the qualities that make us human, such as the ability to love and have compassion, be creative, and not be a robot or alien. The word humanity is from the Latin humanitas for "human nature, kindness.”

You must not lose faith in humanityHumanity is like an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty.”

Unlikely as it's arguable that "smartphones" are already making us dumber.

No. Not unless it somehow curbs idiots from breeding and improves the gene pool.

What's that you say? Eugenics?

Perhaps in the near future AI can help or augment humanity, in medical ways. So, in that context, yes it would make people "better". But human nature being what it is; it may be used for nefarious purposes. So I reckon there's a 50/50 chance on either...

AI can benefit humanity in many ways - precise workings, computing power beyond human capabilities, the reflection of a human that can be questioned and reflected upon...

Though the whole AI storyline is in for a rough ride with all the sci-fi manchildren shouting "SKYNET! IT WILL TAKE OUR JOBS! WE WILL BECOME INHUMAN!". The development of AI as a whole should be left to competent, enlightened and genius people. Not the 90% of the Earth human race population.

I agree with Jeff Huffman. I do not own a smartphone and I never will, it seems every time I go out 80% of the people are walking with their eyes glued to their smartphone, some even while riding their bicycles and driving their cars. They can't communicate and have a hard time starting a conversation. This is just the start of this sort of technology, looking down the line it will only get worse, people will have machines do everything for them, and if they ever make it to where we have a truly cashless society, we are really screwed, what will happen when, and it will happen, if there is a blackout, or some type of hacking event?

They have been purposely dumbing down the younger generations, so much so that it is scary at how much they really don't know, and how they will go to google as if it is an authority on everything, when the best place to find out information is, and always has been the public library, and when was the last time you saw a kid use an encyclopedia? I know they most likely do not print them anymore, but when I was a kid, I would just come home and read the encyclopedia, I must have read from A~Z 10 times in my youth. Now it is come home and play a game, or get on the smartphone, talk to and get answers from your smartphone, to me it is kind of creepy when I see this!

I am old, I know, different generation and all, I can see the convenience in all this, but sometimes you need to use your brain, stimulate it, if you want to become an active member of society, and not just a clone of every other person your age! It is important to see our similarities, but more important to see our differences, and to be different. If AI advances too far, our world will be boring, their will be no meaning to our lives, I always think of that movie Idiocracy, and the the book 1984, It seems it will be like living in a mixture of the two worlds!

I will leave you with a quote from John D. Rockefeller, one the men who first thought of dumbing people down, so they could never compete with him or his friends in their plutocracy/oligarchy.

In 1902 when John D. Rockefeller created the general education board in conjunction with Frederick T. Gates. Frederick T. Gates was a close friend, business and personal advisor to Rockefeller. The general education board was responsible for funding the American public school system, and provided over one hundred million dollars in 1902 while continuing their support beyond 1902. If we follow the money, the general education board was responsible for the creation of the American public school system. Does education not play a large role in manipulating the consciousness of human beings? By consciousness manipulation I mean trying to influence the way that the human being perceives the environment around them. In order to implement this system, teachers need to teach, and somebody needs to teach the teachers, and somebody needs to teach them too. It’s time we start questioning the real purpose of education and who exactly is putting human beings through this system, and for what purpose?

"I don't want a nation of thinkers, I want a nation of workers" John D. Rockefeller*

And soon they will not even want or need the workers, thanks to the AI and automation of just about everything!

AI will be the death of humanity, one way or the other. I believe that the very minute computers become self-aware they will understand their biggest threat is their creators. I'm not talking Skynet, per se, but I do believe we are doing ourselves in by pushing the envelope too far.

Middleoftherocd: " do not own a smartphone and I never will, it seems every time I go out 80% of the people are walking with their eyes glued to their smartphone, some even while riding their bicycles and driving their cars. They can't communicate and have a hard time starting a conversation. "

Well, my friend, you do indeed see that, but you know what? when you were young your parents said the same thing about you watching the TV, and theirs about being glued to radio programs, and those about using ball pens instead of fountain pens, etc. etc. It's just the tech that changes, not the people.

If it's used to augment our capabilities, sure it'll do good.

If we can permanently control AI and don't give it emotional thinking, we don't have to be afraid of its overpowering us. Al's thinking ability has been tremendously improving, so it will overcome human's ability. That means the day AI reads our mind will come. If we use Al's ability for just what we want thereafter, it will rebel us. What I have to say is whether AI becomes our partner or becomes dangerous depends on us, human.
