quote of the day

I would appreciate it if consumers could understand that farmers are struggling to make shipments.

Farm minister Taku Eto. The record-breaking heat wave last summer caused vegetable prices to soar, and now, the cold front that has led to heavy snowfalls around Japan could make the produce even more expensive.

Sounds like climate change -- which no-one predicted.

Rice and now even simple vegetables are increasing beyond senses?

Japan has many ports that can do imports, commodities from China, Vietnam, Philippines and even countries in South America. So Govt, just let those item into Japan or just use domestic product let the price increase

A lot of this is due to JA's failure, and incompetence and greed. Almost all agriculture is controlled by the bemouth and they decided what and when can be planted so as to ensure the highest prices! But that does not benefit the consumer! It is time to get rid of JA, let farmers produce what they want and help out the customer.

Those products from those countries ARE in Japan.

Prices in my region - famous for producing certain popular vegetables - have really escalated, even though the hot summer and current snow has had a much less impact here compared to many other places.

I'm assuming that buyers from the major populated zones just offer prices too hard to resist to local farmers, so the general price increases countrywide.

Some vegetables are higher price-carrots and cabbages. I can see many fields with cabbages but too small for the farmers to pick. If prices are too high we stop buying that item.

I don't know if its JA "controlling" it, but production of many vegetables is concentrated in one or two prefectures. Heat will affect pretty much the whole country, but heavy rain and snow are localized. While it is snowing in a very unusual way this year, it is only affecting certain areas. Sapporo for example is 35% below average for this winter. Most of Aomori by contrast has been hammered. Here in Nagano, Iiyama, the snowiest city, is about average but Hakuba is 40% above average.
