We need to create a society in which people who want to have children can make choices in accordance with their wishes without anxiety, for example by increasing the number of jobs that are compatible with child-rearing.

We don’t need to “create” new societies, people had plenty of children when poverty levels were far higher than today. What has happened is our expectations have gotten higher, and the cost of satisfying these expectations is high. You can’t afford designer clothes, bags, shoes, lunch at trendy restaurants, and still afford to raise children.

Finally some statement that really make sense, is not all about just giving away money but many aspects need to be considered.

In other words, by increasing the number of jobs that can be performed remotely. No job is more compatible with child rearing than that.

That is one part of the equation. Another part is making sure that people are NOT being worked to death, are getting paid a decent living wage, and are not being overtaxed.

Are they kidding? Many people, especially all younger ones with those lower wages or only part time jobs at minimum wages, can’t even afford for themselves a normally filled shopping cart anymore, after the financial corona damage and now during hyper inflation. Have you seen the price tags in the shelves lately? That’s not moon prices, that’s Alpha Centauri prices, especially for cheese, sausages, imported foods. You would need at least five or ten of such precarious jobs at restaurants or gas stations and 80 hours per one day for an income that enables you having a child or two children, additionally you need money for paying for accommodation, commuting and expensive child rearing then. But even then you would of course be too exhausted and surely not even capable to meet a woman and only dream of marriage and having a family with children.

In other words, by increasing the number of jobs that can be performed remotely. No job is more compatible with child rearing than that.

Child rearing not necessarily associated with babies, there are different stages toddler, infants etc. There are times that kids can be put at nursery home, even that is with limited time, which require their parent to leave their work on time or even early. While many Japanese companies are well known for long hours and nomikai with their peers and bosses, which are not suitable for child rearing.

Unfortunately, at least in Japan, this society would require a deep and comprehensive social change that unfortunately is not going to happen as long as the people currently in power remain so because they have very different priorities to push.

IF there is space in those nurseries- and as we all know from articles here written on this- that's a pretty big IF.

Many parents can't find slots to put their children there. THAT'S why remote working is the best. It allows for one parent to be a stay at home mom or dad while earning money at the same time.

Was just chatting in class with a bunch of uni lads in class asking them if they ever wanted a house or to make families of their own one day. Lots of shrugs, and looks on their faces, almost like they’ve never really even thought about it , nor ever been asked so directly! Had a great old chatski with them about what true happiness would and could look like. They were well into it too. Chucked some BGM on and got them to talk amongst themselves about it too. ( they were all sitting silently on their cell phones at the start of class, coulda heard a pin drop. Awkward! )

Instead of all of these “We need to create a society that… “ posts, try talking TO the younger generation rather than talking AT or FOR them. You might be surprised by the results. The great societal woes can only be solved through connection.

I think we have just become too selfish. Many adults want to choose personal happiness because many of us were denied of that happiness when we were kids. That's why many of us ought NOT to get married and have kids because it would mean another road to misery.

My father bought a house, raised two kids, drove cars five year old or less, took us on a two week holiday every summer, retired comfortably at 65, and had four pints in the pub three or four times a week on an electrician's salary. My mother did not work at all for ten years. That was in the 1970s and early 1980s. UK electricians are now on about 40-45k. That wouldn't be enough to buy the same house, let alone the other things.
