When I first came to Japan any time a different approach was suggested by someone at worker level, especially regarding technology, my boss, who was in his 60's, would pause a few seconds, then reject the suggestion replying 'Japanese way'. To me that was code for 'I'm too old to change'.

Classic, can make the technology but can't use the technology. Tape recorder, Fax are still staples in business. These new fangalled things like email and cloud are just beyond comprehension for Japanese. Hell the government designated head of cyber security boasts that he doesn't use a computer and had no idea what a thumb drive is.

The younger generation are much more tech-savvy. But when they become the old bosses, they'll be stuck at what they knew best during the start of the 21st century, while everyone else has moved on. In other words, Japan will perpetually be 20 years behind the rest of the world because the ojiisans dictate how things are done.
