Amid growing awareness about human rights and environmental issues, it is a self-evident fact that the SOFA has become inconsistent with the demands of the time and the needs of the public.

Time for a review. And negotiations.

Japan should just sell Okinawa to the US for about, I don't know, $4 and move all of the US military people (including the dependents, civilians and contractors) there. Japan saves the sympathy budget.

since when has japan cared about human rights?

OK!

If and I mean if human rights are such a big thing for him regarding SOFA then he should be even more eager and willing to push for changes in the Japanese legal system.

Long periods of detection without charges, no right to legal representation during questioning, police and prosecutors literally forcing confessions, etc...

I am not American, never been in the military don't really support any of it but at least under SOFA the US service personnel get what most developed countries other that Japan offer to everyone.

The right to a lawyer, a reasonable period they can be detained without charges, etc...

The USA will never accept changes to SOFA as long as the systematic abuses built in to the Japanese legal system are still in place.

Japan should reach for independence and politely ask the US to move their forces to Guam, Hawaii or Texas.
