A senior Environment Ministry official. The government will conduct an experiment on the feasibility of relocating soil from sites where decontamination work was carried out following the 2011 accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant to three locations in the Kanto region -- Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo; the National Environment Research and Training Institute in Tokorozawa, Saitama Prefecture; and the National Institute for Environmental Studies in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture.

By reducing the amount to be disposed, we hope to lower the hurdle for securing areas that are willing to accept the material as a final destination.

Sorry, but that’s an illusion. Radiation and its duration has not very much to do with the amount in tons of the contaminated soil. For example, there’s a story about a very small 8 mm capsule radiating like hell, which has fallen out of the security box from a truck while driving on a long road, in Australia. Now they search that very little nuclear beast, which usually is used for procedures in mining, whatever that means or is useful for, but because it’s very dangerous even if you’re meters away from it, they have to urgently find it. That’s an example that the size or mass of a material doesn’t say much about its radiation amount.

After all these years they are still trying to do this ??? UNBELEIVABLE !!!! Why pollute other areas of beautiful Japan. That poision earth needs to stay where it is.....or spread some of it on the gardens of TEPCO executives and government ministers who have/had shares in 'That' company.

Why don't they bury it right next to the Fukushima reactors? No one nor anything will occupy that land in the future. Why contaminate other areas especially as densely populated as these three places?

Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is lovely. Glad I've been there, because I'd avoid it like the plague if it became a dumping ground for radioactive waste. What nutter considered destroying such a pleasant, welcoming open space in the middle of Tokyo in such a way?
