quote of the day
I think it’s better to create a new law to prevent sexually abusive teachers from returning to work at schools and introduce a system that would allow background checks during the employment process to ensure applicants have not committed sex crimes.

Serious question: are schools here so desperate for teachers that they would allow those who'd sexually abused students back in the classroom? Or anywhere near a school?
Mickelicious
You mean something like a sex offenders register?
Or something siloed to BoE that lets them reoffend elsewhere?
bearandrodent
Jeez, are we still talking about this? Not sure what is so difficult in getting this done even in Japan.

There aren't already these processes in place? What is this 1921?

Apply it to violent and abusive teachers as well.

Yup. Or bloody simple criminal record would do. Either of those, it's what most countries use and employers do it to check your criminal background.
Paperwork, meetings, discussion, more meetings, asking for an advice to their superiour.

LOL....the less teachers, the more bullying, stress occurs and aggressive becomes the staying rest of the staff anyway , and finally all have to be fired. Just continue your zoom lessons or YouTuber dancemix teaching if you dream of completely avoiding such problems. And don’t forget to push out also those perverted who demand special haircuts, colors or underwear. They are not so very much better.

Since I first got to know Japan, I always kept as a rough estimate in my head that Japan was about 20-25 years behind in its thinking than the rest of the developed world in attitudes. Nothing has really changed - here we see Japan wrestling with a concept that other countries tackled and dealt with ages ago.

I'd say I can't believe this doesn't exist already, but TIJ.
Tom
Surprised that this is not already in place.

Well teachers are in a class of their own, just read the news on any given day, they are seriously a different breed when it comes to sex crimes.
A sex offenders register here targeting teachers is a MUST., and long over due.

This is long ‘past due’: Child abuse is up 8.9 percent in Japan for 2020. - The welfare of children seldom gets the daily headline here. For example, this was news everywhere else: Mar 5, 2021 ‘Child abuse cases across Japan top 100,000 for first time” - “NPA data released Feb. 4, 2021 shows that suspected child abuse is up 8.9 percent, 8,738 from the previous year. - Source: http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/14200517

Do you mean a system similar to those in most other countries? Countries where parents would have a field day in court getting millions from the education board after a teacher was re-employed after offending?
Luddite
When? Hurry up.
