quote of the day

If a person dies immediately after inoculation, it is only natural that the bereaved family would want to know the truth. Medical institutions need to try to provide careful explanations.

Takashi Nakano, professor of infectious diseases at Kawasaki Medical School. Medical institutions in Japan are being faced with tough calls about whether to report to the government deaths that follow COVID-19 inoculations as suspected of being linked to adverse effects from the vaccine.

Vaccines do not prevent that. They mainly prevent symptoms.

No. Vaccines can prevent spreading of infection. The current data suggest that this is the case for the current batch of vaccines.

So there is nothing selfish about not taking these unapproved vaccines.

So just take one of the many approved Covid vaccines.

zichi - I think you mean 40million Yen compensation from the Chinese government.....

No, I didn't. Actually, it's ¥44 million.

So then if you are asymptomatic you spread the virus to others like a Typhoid Mary. This disease is not just about you, its about others that you can kill through your actions. Like not wearing a mask.

More reason why we need full transparency and I personally won't take it, but others want to, go right ahead.

This is why a fourth wave is occurring, due to selfishness and basic public health being turned partisan by the rightwing crowd and/or by religious propaganda.

The USA has fully vaccinated 100 million people, if there were serious side effects from the shots then they would have surfaced as was the case with the J&J jab. But officially 600.000 people have died, probably double that amount as under Trump deaths were not reported accurately, and yet somehow that is not significant to those blind to the facts of the pandemic. Vaccinations should be mandatory to protect the general pubic from idiots.

Yeah, someone with heart problems might have a heart attack and die if they push too hard when they go to the toilet (or if they quickly run up a flight of stairs). Did they die from defecation? Or did they die from a heart attack?

maybe too much raw beer?

Yeah, someone with heart problems might have a heart attack and die if they push too hard when they go to the toilet (or if they quickly run up a flight of stairs). Did they die from defecation? Or did they die from a heart attack?

That makes no sense, the huge difference is that getting infected with COVID is not part of the normal daily routine. It is a well known pathology that exacerbates risks and can even cause death by itself.

It is much more close to a person being chronically anemic, if this person gets injured and lose a small amount of blood that would be of no real consequence to a healthy person, for him specifically that can be still enough to cause shock and death. The immediate cause would be the hemorrhage but the chronic anemia would still be a very important contributor to the death, that would have not happened without it.

If a person was very likely to live a long and fulfilling life even with their comorbidities but this is cut short because of COVID there is no problem with consider this death a COVID related.

I think that virusrex already explained that covid can exacerbate a preexisting condition making that death a covid death so there is no difference between from and of. Unless you want to say that someone died with covid but that covid had nothing to do with it.

But what exactly gets better or changes the situation if they are told something that only is for calming down but the medical institutions also don’t know in full detail?

It may surprise you but in medicine nothing is known in full detail, that doesn't mean it is not a huge relief for the family of a patient to know as much as possible about what happened so it is an ethical duty for the doctors to provide as much information as they can.

The question makes perfect sense, and the answer can also be completely relevant even if not a complete explanation.

It’s like asking the lottery, why did my specific ticket lose in this week’s drawing. Makes no sense, neither the question nor any explanation as answer.

America approves the Pfizer vaccine for 12 year-olds.

"America" did not approve anything. According to Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, "Parents and guardians can rest assured that the agency undertook a rigorous and thorough review of all available data, as we have with all of our COVID-19 vaccine emergency use authorizations."

The FDA only OK'd emergency use authorization, not approval. There is a difference.

No where in my post did I write about the strawman word "with". I was addressing/explaining the difference between the words "from" and "of" as reported in the media.

But this is Japan and we get no explanations. Just swirling anecdotes.

Understand that there is a big difference between dying "from" covid (people with other contributing comorbidity health issues such as obesity, body organ failures, etc., who also had covid in their systems at the time of their death) and dying "of" covid (having the disease being the only reason for their deaths). Be watchful of falling into the trap of such weasel wording used by the media (both print and broadcast).

I was going to answer but virusrex beat me to it. Hope you learned something today

An independent media outlet in the UK has developed its own database search tool for adverse reactions reported after vaccination: https://yellowcard.ukcolumn.org/yellow-card-reports

Is there anything similar for Japan?

Lol. UK Column is a right wing conspiracy/fake news site. The guy who claims to be the owner, Brian Gerrish, has appeared on Alex Jones's Info Wars. Funding of the site is unclear.

That is not correct, dying "with" COVID can be a direct result of the infection even if the main cause of death is the comorbidity.

If someone has a health problem but it is controlled and it is expected for this person to live even decades with it, but dies during the acute infection because the condition could not be controlled anymore, that should also be included as a COVID related death. Saying that COVID should be the "only" cause of death is misleading and incorrect and an artificial distinction only for it.

-1 ( +6 / -7 )

*Absolutely. But it is also true that they should provide an autopsy as well if the person is suspected to have died from covid.*

And ¥40 million compensation from the government.

There is no need to make immediate judgements, report everything as it happens and explain in as much detail to the family the known risks and how likely or unlikely is for the event to be related to the vaccination. Experts can take the data and analyze it in detail in order to discover if there is anything that could be related to the vaccine and they will be the ones that can make the decision based on that evidence.

The problem is the people that try to use only half of the information to mislead people, so it should be made very clear that reports obviously include events that are not actually related to the vaccines. For example if you report that 2 out of every million people vaccinated die it looks bad, but if the report also includes that in unvaccinated people 5 out of every million died on the same period then it is easy to understand vaccines are not the cause of the deaths.
