Hopefully the number of accidents and fatalities will not increase too much until this scarcity is solved, but looking at the numbers when this was not a problem doesn't leave room for optimism.

Blaming everything on Covid and Putin is wearing a bit thin. Ukraine was never the epicentre of world trade and everywhere except China is treating Covid like flu.

You don’t need any semiconductors or integrated circuits at all for such simple things like a traffic light. Conventional electronics parts like the ones already used in last century will just do fine.

No, most modern traffic signals are microprocessor controlled and have inputs from sensors under the road and pedestrian pushbuttons. They are often integrated with central traffic management computers.

Why not use roundabouts instead? Much more efficient (and cheaper). All you need is a white circle in the middle of the junction.

Kitty, my thoughts as well, though I also agree they need to be raised to prevent idiots driving straight over them. Perhaps plant with flowers to improve the concrete jungle?

The new LED lights caused problems in the Hokkaido and Northern Honshu areas because the heavy snow and ice stuck to them. The 'old-fashioned' ones with tungsten light bulbs used to melt the snow and ice off them due to the heat generated! Progress?

In the UK we call them zebra crossings. Like at Abbey Road.
