Dr Arvind Singhal, professor of communication at the University of Texas at El Paso, referring to the 1980s NHK morning drama drama "Oshin," which was a hit not just at home in Japan but also in more than 60 countries. There's been renewed interest in the series after its screenwriter Sugako Hashida, one of Japan's most successful TV writers and an Order of Culture recipient, died in April of lymphoma at the age of 95.

The good old 80s Must admit I have never heard of this. Might have to give it a watch if I can find it on Netflix or Amazon or something.....
