This is merely part of the cost of reducing headcount.

Stop treating valued customers like criminal suspects.

This is very unusual, for folk to take items without paying. A sign stating "please pay for all the items" sensors triggers the door lock and video, if all item are not paid for and not replaced. would work way better.
