"It is weird to require an approval from a spouse when taking a pill. Is Japan still living in the middle ages?"

This is just female-terrified conservative males wherever you find them who want to consider their 'partners' as their chattel. For example in America, most of the men who claim they are PRO-LIFE are also PRO-WAR so one must assume that 'LIFE' is not really the issue and CONTROL is. The only thing different in Nihon is that these men do not hide behind a blatant, contradictory hypocrisy...

"Pro-life" is a misnomer. We all know it should be anti-choice if we're going for accuracy.

Is Japan still living in the middle ages?

yes.

Yes Japan is still in the middle-ages, sad and pathetic but true

I actually found out about this situation 2 weeks ago thanks to this article.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/may/31/japan-to-approve-abortion-pill-but-partners-consent-will-be-required

Suddenly all these sad stories about young / recent mothers killing their offspring (and possibly committing suicide), or abandoning them in coin-lockers or toilets start to make sense, eh?

Better than a coat hanger I guess

I second that...reading articles like this in 2022 is just mind blowing stuff. Advanced country , yeah.

Abortion pills? Does this equate to killing the fetus?

Abortion pills? Does this equate to killing the fetus?

Try dictionary.com for the definition of abortion.

Kind of moot since most Japanese are opting out of marriage and tired of fighting the system.

Does 'spouse' mean only husband/wife in Japan (it's not always so rigid)? If so, then this is presumably one of those signature Jgov backhanded ways of banning single women from accessing the pills. Either way, it is presumably to maintain a male partner's control over a woman's body, as they have over their pet dog when they take it to the vet. So yeah, #MiddleAges.

You can understand why Japanese women might prefer a career and a fur baby over being a guy's chattel. I certainly would.

That if she's not married or single? Would agree need to bring legal proof saying she's not married or doesn't have a boyfriend?

That didn't come out right.

WHAT if she's not married or single? Would SHE NEED to bring legal proof saying she's not married or doesn't have a boyfriend?

Make sure to always consult with the "experts" before taking the pill.

Once ganja is legalized, things will return to the Stoned Ages.....

One of many obvious problems here is what happens when a wife in a sexless marriage wants to take the pill. There are many sexless marriages in Japan.

A husband in a sexless marriage does not need his wife's permission to take Viagra.

Odd the headline just says “a pill”.

why did they leave out what kind of pill. Kinda important to know and quite relevant.

the kind of people who would object to such mutual consent are already not sleeping with their spouse anymore. So won’t need it.

Disgraceful that in a first world country women do not have autonomy over their bodies.

Typical Japanese way of dealing with a problem. Does a new measure need a well though, balanced way of doing it that does not defeat the purpose of putting it in order in the first place?

why bother? just put a quick fix that spoils the whole thing and call it a day, its not like the country is terribly late compare with the rest of the world.

To those of you talking about the Stone Age and generally getting your knickers in a twist, which part of this -

 criticizing a proposal

do you not understand?

Women in Japan will have more freedom and power than women in the US where abortion will be banned outright even in cases of rape and the GOP ( including women ) support this very idea! That’s living in the Middle Ages ( Japan isn’t as bad as that )!

In my country, largest of EU, free access and less than the equivalent of 1000Y.

My wife has used it once. Of course it was my fault. Very smooth and reduces the stress drastically for all.
