It would be a waste for human resources who were trained using taxpayers' money to leave Japan.

University of Shizuoka professor Sachi Takahata. Despite serious staff shortages, some foreigners with experience in Japan's nursing care industry face a danger of being forced to return to their country without being able to obtain a new residency status being launched in April.

They are people, not resources.

Of course it would, but the government doesn't view these foreigners as human resources. It views them as disposable labor. And they're more than willing to offset the higher costs of such programs if it means maintaining their perceived homogeneity. That this outlook is short sighted or that it merely kicks the can down the road until the crisis is full blown, will not penetrate discussions. Not to worry though, when 35% of the population is elderly by 2040, there should be plenty of robots to provide loving care to them.

Luddite, you probably know that it's not limited to discussions of foreign labor. MEXT is of full of blathering treatises about fostering global human resources.

You would think, but the people at the top don't see the rest of us as human.

Exactly! which is why I don't want to raise my kids here. By the time they're out of college nearly half the country will be grey.

Not to worry though, when 35% of the population is elderly by 2040, there should be plenty of robots to provide loving care to them.

My personal belief is that its going to get there MUCH earlier than that. MUCH earlier. And I think that its too late to reverse this trend. I really do.

They are not being trained! They are being exploited and abused. 'If' they happen to learn any skills while cleaning bed pans, changing adult diapers, mopping floors, cleaning up radioactive waste and washing the CEO's car, good on them!

They were nurses before they came here. Thus their main "training," ie, medical training, was done in their own countries. Does the speaker have a Japanacentric attitude, or what.

They were nurses before they came here.

Are you sure about that? I'm not - I think I've heard that they get their caregiver training here.

What kind of waste? Chemical waste? Some of these "professors" are simply idiots, public money aint spent on their "training" , its spent on bureaucrats and their "trainers" and Japan gets the benefit of cheap workforce.

and yes they should go home to be able to use these "skills" back home ....the cycle of life .
