quote of the day

Most of the Yamanashi Maglev is in a tunnel, so you only have a few seconds to see the outside. I think you'll be amazed by the speed.

Tomoaki Seki, manager of the Central Japan Railway Company, which is conducting tests on the new train that uses powerful magnets and ground coil to reach speeds topping 500 kph on a 40-km test track in Yamanashi Prefecture. Several times a day, crowds gather atop an observation deck built specifically to view the world's fastest train.

I think I'd enjoy the shinkansen more than the maglev. Higher speed yes but when most of the trip is going to be in pure blackness I'd rather have the shink with some blue skies and scenery.

People with their noses glued to a cell phone screen probably won't know the difference between blue skies and spectacular views of Mt. Fuji vs being in a tunnel for two hours. And they won't be amazed at the speed, either. They'll get on the train, open their phones, wait, then get off the train at their destination. With a Selfie!

Just like driving on the freeway from Shikokuchuo in the north of Shikoku all the way down to Kochi. Fast in the tunnels but not that fast. Boring actually.

But a wonderful engineering feat none the less.
