Nagasaki must continue to have a special responsibility to warn the world to the great dangers that continue to threaten us all and to inspire peace between our many communities.

Japan-born British novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, the winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in literature, speaking in London after the prefectural and city governments of Nagasaki conferred honorary citizen awards on him. Ishiguro, who lived in Nagasaki until he was five, said a part of him has never quite left the city.
