A Japan Meteorological Agency spokesperson. The agency said the average sea level along Japan's coast in 2020 was the highest on record, rising more than 8 centimeters from the usual figure.

Guess eventually the sea walls will be entirely around the coast but what about the 4,000 plus islands.

Sea walls seem like a short-term solution to a long-term problem.

If the sea rises enough, those sea walls can be used as bicycle paths or pedestrian walkways for tourists to experience waves and ocean views while the cities they are ‘protecting’ will move to higher ground.
