How is it that a governor has the authority to address the UN? These politicians are wasting my Japanese taxes on these trips. To lead you must be able to follow. Kyodo, quit inflating this current "regime" here on Okinawa...

He will NOT mention that the majority of anti base protestors, basis for his grandstand campaign are not from Okinawa and some not even from Japan.

Okinawa has every right to protest the bases. Let them put bases near the Tokyo area and see if Tokyoites will complain. Of course they will.

He will NOT mention that the majority of anti base protestors, basis for his grandstand campaign are not from Okinawa and some not even from Japan.

If that were true, certainly NHK would have shown that as a vindication of Abe's policies. The fact that they haven't proves its not true.

If Abe doesn't fix this, it will become the spark from which serious calls for self determination will flare up

Great other countries are going to the Human Rights Meeting will be talking about refugees, dead kids washing up on shore, and this clown is going to be whining about a Military Base.

How many Syrians or other refugees has Japan accepted, compared to Europe and the U.S.?

Don't know about NHK but the other news service and magazine already have.

Funny, I have seen not a single article about Okinawa in any of the many international papers I read, and I mean not even a sentence in passing. Between Europe being overrun by refugees, the middle east on fire, China's economy imploding, and election season beginning to move along in America, there is plenty of more important news to print. Okinawa is barely getting any press in Japan. On a scale of 1 to 10 in international importance, the US base relocation in Okinawa couldn't make the cut for the top 10000 candidates.

How many Syrians or other refugees has Japan accepted, compared to Europe and the U.S.?

Japan took 11 last year, and looks to accept even fewer this year. America will accept up to 70,000 for 2015. I hope America tells Onaga to kiss their red-white-and-blue ass.

As I read it, this article is about the US base relocation in Okinawa.

This article is not about the plight of refugees, the war in Syria or Chinas economy ad infinitum...........!

Because many local people have been suffering in Okinawa for over 7 decades now due to an overbearing military presence, Onaga as the overwhelmingly elected representative of the people thinks it's appropriate to state his case before the UN.

What can't some of you understand about this?

What can't some of you understand about this?

Because he's choosing a HUMAN RIGHTS meeting, not just a general UN meeting.

Because he HAS chosen a HUMAN RIGHTS meeting, this article IS about the plight of the MILLIONS around the world who are out of house and home.

And he's going to talk about Japanese who have to deal with those pesky Americans.

While Japan rejects virtually EVERY REQUEST for asylum from those with zero human rights.

Gaijin - thank you.

He has a human right to express what he considers to be the suppression of rights of his citizens and speak on their behalf.

Trying to say " Yeh, but MILLIONS of people around the world are worse off" is poor arguing in the least.

The forum exists to hear all complaints, all stories - from tragic life threatening humanitarian disasters to what some see as the illegal possession of land and suffering of their livelihood.

Did you eat a delicious meal last night? Don't you feel guilty when there's so much starvation in the world?
