A panel for loneliness? I've lived alone for more than 20 years, and I'm definitely NOT lonely. If I was the chair of this silly commission, I'd put them all to task trying to describe the difference between living alone (alone-ness) and loneliness. Two totally different mental states, and that should keep the panel going for years and years. The Japanese way. All the way!

The lack of interaction is debilitating, especially for extroverts in a group-oriented society.

I've spent many a discussion with my Japanese colleagues trying to separate two things. 1. Alone and lonely. They, like TrevorPeace pointed out, are not the same. You can be lonely in a crowd and quite content alone. However, my Japanese friends don't seem to be able to separate the two.
Thunder and lightning.
