quote of the day

The deer are innocent, but a balance is necessary for us to coexist. We need to reduce their numbers a little more.

I enjoy deer hunting in Japan. The season is four and a half months' long with no bag limits!

We could also stop expanding cities, and returning the terrain occupied by abandoned buildings to nature.

but a balance is necessary for us to coexist

Saying that after destroying half of their habitat is damn hypocritical.

Could we not just reduce hunters a little more?

Not an actual cull, before anyone freaks at the suggestion. Just take away their toys and let them fire at clay pigeons or target boards, instead.

kill the deers, i don't care. These animals need to be reigned or yet better bring back the wolves.

Most city folk are so out of touch with the natural world it's sickening. Spending your days holed up in some office building, crammed in train cars, and surrounded by people you don't know or care about. What kind of existence is that?

Hunting deer and other animals is how we become who we are. It's part of our shared history on this planet. The reason this woman is saying deer have to be dealt with is because there are no more wolves in Japan. So either bring them back or increase the numbers of hunters.

You do realize how deer will overpopulate an area and cause massive damage, not to mention get sickly or diseased looking for scarce food, if left unchecked. If anything, more people should take up hunting not less.

The deer population is exploding in Japan and something needs to be done. HOWEVER, I am 100% against culling. That is just wrong. Hunt the deer for food. Venison is very delicious and has less fat than beef or pork. Hunters should be helped by the government by having venison subsidies and by facilitating the sale of vension at government outlets such as the Michi no Eki we see all over Japan. Moreover, more awareness should be made about the deer population problem AND the deliciousness of venison and umbles (deer innards)

But no killing deer for the purpose of sport or culling. That's wrong. I personally would love to obtain a Japanese hunting license for the sole purpose of hunting deer for personal consuption, but found it too costly and time consuming. But I would like to hunt deer as our main source of meat consumption.

Most people here have no idea what deer meat tastes like. I imagine that most also wouldn't prefer it over beef, pork, and chicken. My friend, who is a hunter, and I plan on starting a business selling deer meat marketed towards dog owners. Pet food and jerky snacks. Shouldn't be hard to sell at our local Michi no Eki either cause I'm already a member and have been selling vegetables and berries.

There is a welcome movement to make game meat trendy and customer friendly in Japan.

Since the extinction of the Japanese wolf and decline in hunters, it is estimated that deer and boar populations are nearing saturation point.

Responsible, nature conscious young people are starting to pick up the slack and I think that’s a good thing.
