quote of the day

The Japan conundrum is just the fact that if you don't test for it, you're not going to find a lot of cases.

Jason Kindrachuk, PhD, an assistant professor of viral pathogenesis at the University of Manitoba in Canada. Experts wonder if Japan has kept the coronavirus contained or just hasn't tested enough of its population.

Doesn’t take an expert to ask that question.

There is a stat that the Japanese medical system does more testing per capita than other in the world. So this stance of deliberately not testing during a crisis is puzzling, to say the least.

Another stat shows japan does the least no. of autopsies in the world. And it seems to not robustly investigate causes of death. The AUM doomsday cult murdered over a dozen people with nerve gas, whose deaths were highly suspicious but never medically investigated until the subway attack. Given all that, we may never know the truth, while the Japanese congratulate themselves on doing a great job on fighting the virus.

Now there's a revelation!

But..... influenza rates are down and there hasn’t been an increase in the number of pneumonia cases (hidden as Corvid-19) so at present testing or not testing, there hasn’t been a jump in cases..... However, time will tell!

Yeah but people will still come on here and try to spread fear and hatred for Japan. I’m one who believes the infection rate is high for Covid-19 and testing more could prove that. The mortality rate in Japan is above that in Korea, but if we knew about more of the infected we’d probably see a similar rate. The containment of the infection would also be much more likely with more testing.

If by not testing this is indeed a strategy to deliberately delay the amount of cases reported in order to keep the Olympics, this may go down as one of the crimes of the century against their own population. I sincerely hope its not the case, but is incompetency of this scale even possible? This level of complacency?

It’s pretty much business as usual here where I live, which is just eerie.

Back home in NZ the numbers being tested are also low and I think the reason given is to not overwhelm the health system. Certainly not because of the Olympics there. I get that Japan has a lot riding on it but I’m not sure there’s much truth to it. Like you I hope not.

This ties right into the Olympics.

The Japan conundrum is the same as the Trump conundrum. AKA sticking your head under the sand like an ostrich and pretending coronavirus is not a problem. The 12 infected people a month ago in the U.S. that Trump was crowing about, has now exploded to nearly 25,000 within a week and explodimg daily as more tests are done.

The USA has tested just over 195,000 samples, based on a priority system. 25,400 confirmed cases in the USA. Health care people, high risk people, public safety people. They are tested first. Seems smart.

There is still a shortage of tests, but that is being addressed as more vendors spin up capacity. Read about a 45min test that can be run locally by untrained health care people on widely deployed systems world-wide. 5,000 of those devices are in the US at hospitals and labs already.

@Mr Kipling

Where can you see stats/info for the pneumonia cases? (or other respiratory illnesses, or deaths marked off as such, or diabetes, or heart problems, etc?) Genuinely asking.

How are you guys still doubting Japan has been able to control its cases, how can this virus be spreading and no and people dying in secret without any word out there? Let’s face facts, there is no way anyone getting a cute pneumonia would not go to the hospital, almost everyone has insurance here, if hospitals get these patients even without testing we will still here about them, all hoping for the worst for Japan are not going to see it happen because they’ve adopted a cool head approach to the situation which has been good so far, u can criticize all you want but I’m happy with what we have here than what is going on in Europe and USA

Reckless:

I tend to agree. Plus, the fact that when the CCP tells you to do something, you do it! Also, places like Hong Kong, in particular, along with Taiwan, had terrible experiences with SARS and so they had more awareness this time round.

This is the only data that I could find

In Japanese up to 2018:

In English up to 2016:

This is going to turn out to be Japan's 3rd atomic bomb but much worse!

The situation can't be that bad if they're going ahead with the Olympics, right? Right? Right? Hmm...

Even if there a thousand time more cases in Japan, if the symptoms are mild and or the people are asymptomatic, there is no need to worry. It is another coronavirus. I think there are four others.

We do not need panic in Japan. Docile people in general and will gladly stand in line waiting for instructions.

Myself and family are living life normally. Sure wish this weird strong wind would stop however.

Also, air conditioners should not be on in trains now.

Japan's lack of testing is a disgrace.

Japan is showing itself to be a third world nation.

I can't trust Japan at all.

Japan is deceiving the world.

It is deliberately not testing to keep the number of cases low.

It is trying to protect the Olympics.

It is pathetic.

People can keep making this argument. On the other hand, it's very hard to hide overwhelmed hospitals and rampant deaths. Why aren't hospitals in Japan fuller than they are? Why aren't more people dead? It's true that Japan is not testing at nearly a high enough rate to give a clear picture how widespread the Wuhan coronavirus is. It's also true that the disease hasn't spread nearly as fast in Japan as it has in some other countries based on hospitalizations and deaths.
