quote of the day

The nuclear issue, the missile issue that imposes a threat to Japan and the abduction issue should come as a set of three. Lacking any one of the three will not solve the issue.

Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda. The Japanese government is concerned that the United States may reach an agreement with North Korea -- and remove it from a list of outlaw countries that sponsor terrorism -- without addressing issues that Japan regards as fundamental to its national interest, such as the abductee issue. Pick one Fukuda, but the Nuke issue is the biggy for now!

If I recall the abduction issue didn't become an issue until about five-six years ago, maybe seven. For the 30-some years between the abduction of Megumi Yokota until then the Japanese government was relatively silent. Why is Fukuda linking it to nuclear arms and missiles?

because they didn't really care about the abductees until it looked like they could benefit politically from it

national interest = LDP interest

I hate to be harsh, but we really need to prioritize on this one.
