quote of the day

The prices of cup noodles and precooked curry have gone up. To find the cheapest prices, I’ve been checking three stores in my neighborhood, including supermarkets and a discount store.

They should go up a 1000% these not only terrible for you but terrible tasting salty foods. Its better to make your own curry, yakisoba, miso soup etc.

I make my own Indian-style curries with wholewheat naan bread. We usually eat soba noodles or somen. But we cook ourselves. All so easy.

In 30 years I have had cup noodles a few times.

I agree that these so-called "foods" are horrible and of course terrible for you, but the alternative for a lot of people whose pay is not increasing, but all costs and taxes are, is to eat them. Have you seen supermarkets and convenience stores this month? In every single shop I've been to aisles that had bread, jams, coffees and teas, and other foods (most of them not so great either) have been halved if not completely cleared out to make way for dozens of styles of instant noodles. Some supermarkets have given them an entire aisle now. Demand for them is up because they are a cheap alternative to better but now three-times-more-expensive food. People are replacing regular, healthy meals with cup noodles and snack breads because the cost of, let's say one onion, could be upwards of 200 yen. This poor schlub is your average Joe, and sadly this may be the only nourishment he can find that won't otherwise put him out and unable to eat completely.

Jacking up the prices 1000% is the kind of thing the Japanese government does for imported rice, butter, and other goods to protect domestic farmers who cannot produce enough and so charge four times the price. Why would you want them to make this kind of thing even more expensive when nothing else can be afforded to some?
