quote of the day

To close the gender gap, it is essential to improve the working environment on the set. There is harassment, working hours are long, and sleep time is reduced. Even if we train young women, they can't stand it and leave.

So film-makers can't control the people on their sets. Got it.

But the men put up with it.

Long hours, yes. But harassment falls overwhelmingly on women, not just in the film industry but in almost any Japanese workplace.

It’s got nothing to do with women’s rights or working hours, it’s japanese culture. Change that, and the problems will disappear

But the men put up with it. Sounds like the women have other options that the men don't...

One look at the gender disparity of homeless people will answer that for you. Women always have options, men have all the pressure and expectations on their shoulders.

The women in my Japanese company have it far easier than the men. They take days off on a weekly basis, they get given less work to do, are given a far easier time if they are not performing and the pretty ones get away with murder, literally doing nothing and drawing a good salary. It's grossly unfair to the male team members.

Nope, it's simply toxic culture. If people are leaving as they can't stand the practices at the workplace, then the workplace really needs to change its way of thinking and working.

Right, because men are not subject to harassment, long working hours and reduced sleeping time. /s

Much of the work involves being on standby and catering to the whims and over-the-top requests of egotistical producers/ directors and demanding talent/actors/ artists, and often excused as creative behaviour.

A little more understanding of what these demands and requests actually entail, and refusing some of the more outrageous ones would go a long way to improve the workplace for everyone.
