We'll create as early as possible a political system to protect democracy and people's lives, and enable a change of government.

Opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Kohei Otsuka, after the DP and another opposition party, the Party of Hope, agreed this week to launch a joint panel for talks to merge into a new party possibly in early May. The two parties will discuss the name, rules and basic policies of the merged entity, aiming to conclude the discussions by the end of April.

Now this is at least trying to sound decent. Most have already foregone even trying to.

We'll create as early as possible a political system to protect democracy and people's lives,

Please do, cause we don't have one now

I guess that’s good news but we’ve seen these mergers before and the doubts about the competence of the opposition unfortunately will not go away. They have proven over and over that they are too incompetent to put anywhere near power

These guys are seriously the kings of rhetoric. Merging with The Party of Hope. A match made in utopian heaven.  Love it. Sounds like a j-girl band name, or a new confectionary. The cynic in me is winning unfortunately.

What a wacky, circular statement.

Democracy IS a political system that enables a change of government.

And I don't want a political system to protect my life, I want these political clowns to extricate themselves from my life. I'm a grown adult and can look after myself! So get out of my way! Get out of everyone's way!

Run on that sort of policy platform and you'd greatly differentiate yourselves from the scandalous "big government" LDP adminstration of Shinzo Abe.

Alas, these opposition morons just keep splitting and merging political parties over and over again, as if that is what is needed to win support.

No! The political system of Democracy is a competition of policy ideas. The popular policies attract the votes, and the unpopular policies don't - as a result you don't need to cooperate with the losers, you just win support yourself and then take power! So stop the nonsense talk about a political system to "protect democracy", and simply use the system to take power!

You would also lose elections in Japan running on that platform. I’d predict you’d get thrashed.
