A special and necessary hand up to compensate for previously deprived, or unfair, special treatment which goes against equal treatment for all: this is how the argument usually devolves.

If there was systemic discrimination, then by all means fix it.

The acceptance policy should be blind to name, gender or race.

No one should have any problem with that. It ain’t that hard.

Not only systematic, but also institutional discrimination is rampant in Japan. Those 2 are much more difficult to fix.
