quote of the day

We think frankly that we are a better ally of Japan than the European Union is and we would expect to have an equal or better deal than Japan gave the European Union regarding agriculture.

Ya reckon?

The U.S is still in NATO and in fact is committing more resources to Europe, not less. Tariffs on the E.U are also suspended.

And Japan? You have a couple of tariffs on steel and aluminium, neither of which was a major export for Japan to the U.S. Talking a couple hundred million dollars to an economy of $4 trillion

Yes Japanese companies are caught up in tariffs on China but they will free themselves from that conundrum over time. In fact, Japan is in a great position to do so considering how linked they are with S.E Asia and Japanese investments in the U.S itself.

America still has Japans back in any potential conflict and is still supplying with the best gear the U.S makes, apart from the F22, which they themselves no longer make.

Matt; You should know better. This is no place for logic or facts. Emotions must rule the day! Under the terrible Trump the US is no one's ally at all (in spite of what you have written which I shall ignore).

Yes Trump is completely unfit to be President but good lord!!! Some of the comments here are beyond ridiculous.

;) I am use to it now. To be fair, you can go to any major online newspaper/media outlet, read the comments section and come away with the same conclusion. Left, right or anywhere in between. Very little logic, very little data and overwhelmingly the comments are an emotional outburst and really partisan.

Guess that's human but we should all try to do better. I am just as guilty, but on economics in particular I do try to back up statements with data. Its easier for economic matters because there is an awful lot of great numerical data available.

And yes, Trump probably is unfit to be President. I don't particularly like his personal morality and daily antics. He talks a lot of nonsense and frequently. But there are some policy directions I do like and at the end of the day, the outcomes of those decisions decades from now could be more positive for America than negative, in my view. Principally on trade and NATO. On climate and environment, I am not Republican so I don't think I would be happy with any Republican President on that front.

The US is there for their own strategic reasons. Not for Europe'S

Talk about being an apologist!

whitewashing.

The US is there for their own self interest.

No it isn't. The bases in Europe were built to contain the Soviet Union. The ones in Japan first to rebuild Japan and then to also have a foothold in Asia.

America still has Japans back in any potential conflict and is still supplying with the best gear the U.S makes.

They're not supplying them. They're selling them and making a profit.

comments are an emotional outburst and really partisan.

This is coming from a guy who wants to see his country become the 51st state?? LOL
