With Rugby World Cup 2019 on track to be a sell-out, and with rugby fever taking hold across Japan, the tournament is set to welcome the largest ever visitor numbers to Rugby World Cup fanzones. Spread across the 12 Host Cities, the 16 fanzones will offer both ticketed and non-ticketed fans a chance to experience the unique, welcoming and inclusive carnival atmosphere Rugby World Cup is famous for.

England 2015 set a record for fanzone attendance with around one million visitors attending the tournament’s 15 fanzones. With Rugby World Cup 2019 hosting 16 fanzones, open for a combined total of 202 days, visitor numbers are expected to exceed the record set in 2015. Operated by each of the 12 Host Cities, fanzones will vary both in size and character based on the individual requirements and nature of each Host City.

Yokohama will host the largest with a capacity of 8,000 people, while Hamamatsu City, one of two fanzones in Shizuoka will host around 1,000 visitors. On average, Rugby World Cup 2019 fanzones will accommodate around 4,000 people.

Japan Rugby World Cup 2019 Organising Committee CEO Akira Shimazu said: “With such incredible demand for match tickets, our fanzones are going to play an important role throughout the tournament. Not only as a meeting place where Japanese and international rugby fans will gather before and after matches, but also where hundreds of thousands of non-ticketed fans will get to experience the magic of Rugby World Cup. With giant viewing screens, live entertainment, sponsor activations, Rugby World Cup merchandise stalls and a wide range of local food and beverage on offer, our fanzones will provide a unique festival atmosphere for which everybody is welcome to experience.”
