Hope Tokyo gets it. Makes sense for Tokyo to get it.

Winning the support of the Tokyo residents will also be important.

Makes the most sense for Istanbul, in my opinion. The Spanish economy is in shambles and they had Barcelona. One could make an argument for another Japanese region (Tohoku, Kansai, Fukuoka..?) but why Tokyo?

No, the money would be better spent on rehousing the tsunami victims. Tokyo is already cramped enough. Why does Japan need this massive ego-rub anyway ?

Not at all. Hardly anyone speaks English and Tokyo getting it would be a prelude for a whole tirade of 'scarey foreigners are coming, but don't worry, if you double the police budget, we'll protect you from them'.

I saw it all before the 2002 World Cup, 'barbarians will get our daughters pregnant' and 'crazy blood lusting foreigners'.

Japan just does not have the mindset for hosting something as big and international like the Olympics and is at least 30 years away from having so.

Madrid or Istanbul, please.

The common perception has been that Istanbul has a fantastic chance to become the first country with a majority Muslim population to host the Games

I didn't know Istanbul was a country.

Dog, you should have mentioned the fiasco of the Nagano Games as well. Business actually went down during and after the event, and local business people made plenty of complaints to the media about losing much of their livelihoods, as their regular customers headed to Hokkaido instead.

As I recall, many Japanese didn't quite "embrace" those games, either.

So all they can do to beat up support is to fly a bunch of banners around Tokyo? Seen them all over the city in the last couple of weeks. Unless the locals embrace it they are pushing sh#ite up hill.

Istanbul makes a lot more sense as the IOC likes the idea of new frontiers and such. Even though I live in Tokyo, I would hate to see the games here. Way better to spend the money up north where it is really needed.

I believe the Summer and Winter Olympics should always be held in the same place, ie Summer, say Japan, Winter, say Switzerland.. My reasoning is no Country can afford the outlandish costs associated with staging these events.

I hope Tokyo gets it as I think this could provide a strong incentive to ban smoking indoors, especially restaurants and bars and izakaya. If they don't, I hope those smoking businesses will drown in a sea of complaints from customers who walk in, take a whiff, complain, and LEAVE for a smoke-free and civilized establishment. Smoke-free establishments should have a big friendly sticker on their doors to help finding them.

Otherwise, it's going to be hell commuting through the Olympic crowds of the clueless.

I hope Instanbul wins the bid.

Tokyo is only bidding because of Ishihara, he failed once, and it's his ego that pushed for a second bid. That alone would be enough for me to vote against the bid.

However taking other factors into account, too many to mention here, Tokyo should withdraw their bid and save the money for more important things, like helping the people in Tohoku.

But to Tokyo, and the people who forced the bid on them, people don't matter, only money does!

Istanbul: Insane terrorism because of religious extremism. Concerns is that Jacques Rogge might be in the wrong crosshair for such groups

Madrid: NO WAY! The EU's gonna die, financially. Period! Unless Barcelona bids for the 2042 Youth Olympic Games for the benefit of the late IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, as the most recognised sporting figure in the province

For Tokyo, We're talking about Gundam excitement. (Concept for the artistic segments of the opening and closing ceremonies) And it has to be financially efficient as Los Angeles 1984. And how? You have the Olympic stadium and its pertaining facilities, so why don't you just renovate it even if your gross domestic product takes a beating?

Istanbul: Insane terrorism because of religious extremism.

Go do some basic research. Turkey is a secular state and hasn't suffered from any terrorism because of religious extremism. It has had it's fair share of political terrorism in its dark past.

WHILE Japan in the 1990's suffered from quite a bit of terrorism because of religious extremism with Aum's Sarin attacks and assassinations of prominent legal and political figures.

August is so hot in Tokyo. Tokyoites get heat strokes just walking the unshaded streets of this concrete capital in August, and normally robust kids on sports teams are commonly are treated for heat-related conditions.

I wonder if this is a factor in the selection? If I were a runner, etc., no way I'd want to compete in such sticky, oppressive heat.

Who says in has to be in August Jeff? The Seoul Olympics ran from the middle of September until the beginning of October. Dates are not set in stone - Candidates submit their proposed dates along with their candidature files.

The only way this would get my support is Tohoku 2020.

Istanbul and Madrid tend to get bit hot during the summer....

@Jeff and KariHaruka - I hope that if Tokyo gets the Games, they're held in October like they were the first time Tokyo held them. That's why Sports Day is on October 10 every year; it was the date of the opening ceremonies that year.

Either Turkey or Spain will do it.

Nooooooooooooooooooooo

Who says in has to be in August Jeff?

Because they're commonly called "the summer games," and summer in Tokyo falls largely in August. Also, the last several have been held in August.
