Lukashenko's exploitation of sport and messing up the lives of athletes for his own selfish political ambition and prestige is the real, harmful version of mixing politics with sport. He needs to be given the knee where it hurts, or even better, the boot.

Long ago, visiting Qinghai, China, a messenger came to inform me that two people wanted to meet me. They'd heard I was in town. Apparently, they had once both been world-class athletes but had fallen afoul of Beijing and were exiled to Qinghai, a traditional place for Chinese leaders to get rid of people they didn't like. This is not a joke. It has happened and continues. Give these people refuge.
