That site has a pay wall, but graphs show that covid hospitalization rates in New York are about 80 per 100,000 for unvaccinated and 5 per 100,000 for fully vaccinated.

People drinking alcohol and smoking increases hospitalization rates too. So glad that Australia has banned smoking and drinking booze…

The hospitalization rates matter when there is a large increase that it overwhelms the hospital system. Like in some states in the US, where Biden has deployed military medical staff to cover for high hospitalization. Smokers and drinkers aren't overwhelming the hospital system.

See above. Also, we are talking about entry to your country, which usually have a higher bar for visitors than your own citizens. It seems most reasonable to required vaccination as a condition of entry when we are in the middle of a pandemic.

I don’t think demanding people be vaccinated has a proper justification, as even vaccinated people can carry the virus. Djokovic has not harmed anyone that I can see.

But unvaccinated people not only increase the infection rate they also increase the hospitalisation rate. This is reason enough to require visitors to your country the modicum of respect to get vaccinated before you enter.

That is certainly a decision that governments are in a position to make, but being unvaccinated against a given virus for me is unreasonable grounds for barring entry. Australia can do that if it wants, of course.

There are consequences both ways. An exclusionary place may find the prestige of the grand slam event that it hosts diminished if it doesn’t allow the world’s top player to compete.

I disagree with you a bit there - I don’t think the majority should be able to effectively gang up in the minority.

I believe in individual freedom first and foremost.

We only fall back to majority rules in limited circumstances (such as not inflicting harm upon others), and otherwise have a tolerance for various forms of diversity. This is how democracy is supposed to be in my view - not one side coercing another because it has more people. If we go down that path then it looks bad for the Taiwanese versus China.

I am double vaxxed myself, but will defend any person’s personal decision to not get vaccinated if they don’t want to, despite what others may say. I know reasonable people who have made the decision to not get vaccinated and so be it.

The last world I want to live in is an authoritarian one, that coerces people into doing things that they don’t freely choose to.

Hope to see Djokovic extend a grand slam record in the only true Grand Slams that remain later this year. His motivation is gonna be good that’s for sure.
