I couldn't agree with you any more, fxgai. This is a very recent development, and I really hate it. Men's tennis is not women's tennis, and vice versa. They're completely separate organizations, with different histories and different rules.

Talking of ratings, I got some time to do a quick search. It is the overall attendance statistic from the US Open home page, but it seems people did pay to go see the matches:

"The US Open set new standards for attendance in 2023, breaking its two and three-week attendance records and becoming the first Grand Slam to welcome more than 950,000 spectators over a three-week period".

Djokovic, a 36-year-old from Serbia, moved one major singles title in front of Serena Williams to become the first player to win 24 in the Open era,

Serena never played best of five sets though did she?

Margaret Court also collected a total of 24, but 13 of those came before professionals were admitted to the Slam events.

I wish media would stop diminishing the great women’s records by comparing them with the men’s - it’s apples and oranges. Hopefully by the time Djokovic retires it is put to bed.

I mean, how many grand sumo titles did Hakuho win? Duh, it’s a different sport. But women’s and men’s tennis is also different.

I mean, how many times did Serena come from two sets down to win? Er, never, and that’s not to disparage her, it is to point out that comparing the women and the men, is silly. That’s why there is women’s and men’s tennis to begin with.

Fighto, have you even watched the match? It was a great battle, and very high quality tennis, much closer than the 3 sets victory suggests (second set was 1 hour 44 minutes!).

Djokovic was better in crucial moments (as he usually is, his mental strength is unbelievable), and he was a more versatile and complete player, attacking the net, drop shots, etc. to shake Medvedev's rhythm.

Yawn.
