The weather conditions atrocious to the point of posing a major danger. The event should have been cancelled.

Imagine driving at 200kph on slick smooth tires in the rain?

A mere 100kph on the highway with all-weather tires can feel pretty hairy.

Especially when there's a Crane in the middle of the track. Madness.

@garypen F1 doesn't use slicks in rain. Look at the top photo.

I strongly disagree, the only issue was visibility, and they made the right call to Red Flag the race at the first accident. The cars were running on Intermediate tires not Full Wets at the very start. The problem was the huge volume of water kicked up by the tires.

The big screw up was, who gave the order for the crane the to enter the track while cars were still out. That is unacceptable. Absolutely.

As we saw, once conditions calmed down it was perfectly safe to go racing, and an exciting event was held under normal and existing rules, and withing the regulated time frame.

What the FIA needs to look into is water removal vehicles to displace standing water before rolling starts.

Gasly was going much too fast in atrocious conditions trying to catch up to the tail end of the ‘snake’ behind the safety car, and was justly penalized.

Seeing a tractor/crane coming towards him on the track would have given him a nasty fright. Seriously I nfortunate timing all round.

Edit: Seriously unfortunate timing…

Outrageous safety breach and and rightfully so being slammed in the international motor sport media and media in general.

I did. And, they look pretty heckin' slick to me.

I should say "almost heckin' slick".

Somebody just pointed out the obvious and the photo of Gasly's car clearly shows intermediates or rain tires. If there any grooves on the tires, they're not slicks. No team or driver would use slicks in conditions like that. But you insist that know better.

Very stupid
