Good for her, but sadly the tournament has already been overshadowed by the staggering incompetence of Australia and its leaders.

Sensational start by Naomi! She is gonna be tough to beat for that 5th Major, that's for sure!

Go Naomi!!

sadly the tournament has already been overshadowed by the staggering incompetence of Australia and its leaders.

Let it go. The rest of us have moved on and are focussed on the tennis.

I took a few brief glances at the play this morning, and Berettini-Nakashima deserves a mention, great tennis. I bet on Nakashima hitting top 20 soon, even higher if he stays healthy and motivated. Korda (future top 10 for sure) destroyed Norrie, Monfils is in the greatest form of his career, Alcaraz is also on his way to top 10. Unfortunately Nishioka lost to Albot. Even without the top seed, things look interesting

Since what they did to Djokovic I don't watch Australia Open, and I don't recommend it to the others who support freedom.

@ Larr Flint

Knowingly having Covid and mixing with others is about freedom is it?

Tainted tournament for the men. The eventual winner will always have an asterisk after their win*****

*Defending champion and No. 1 player was prevented from playing

They'll have the ranking points at a couple extra million dollars in their bank account.

Somehow I don't think they'll care about an asterisk.

Only in anti-vaxxers bitter minds.

The Australian Open - and every Major - is way bigger than one individual.

Not for her, or fans of tennis.

Take it elsewhere.

Astounding photo by the way. That’s one of the best here in recent memory.

@Rob Nada… overshadowed by the staggering incompetence of Australia and its leaders.

No it wasn’t through the incompetence of Australia and it’s leaders! It was through the selfishness of one idiot trying to break the border laws by entering the country and lying in his documents. He tried to enter on a wrong visa class and lied on his immigration forms of not visiting any other country 14 days prior to arrival into Australia. In addition it’s through the negligence of the Australian Tennis Association who wanted him to be there so granted him the medical exemption almost 2 weeks after the deadline of these exemptions and lack of proper documentation. The entire group of people in this panel who granted him the exemption should be investigated and dealt with!

Rules for entry into a country is there to be followed and cannot / shouldn’t be bent or broken for rich people while the common citizens suffer and make sacrifices!!!

Indeed. It will be a stellar tournament. In the men's draw, the young tunas are beginning to blossom. Nadal is in fine for. Naomi is playing well, as are many in the women's draw.

Djokovic, is 34 and his latest antics reflect badly upon him. He will cease to be a dominant force as he is beyond his peak and will begin to plateau down.

Off to a brilliant start to the Aus open 2022! Two weeks of world class tennis with the worlds finest players, in one of the best cities in the world. Even the weather is playing ball. It doesnt get any better than this fr tennis fans.

Well done Australia on once again providing a great sporting spectical for the world.
