It is absolutely not necessary to retire!

I agree it was not a good idea to visit hostess clubs during a tournament, but do you think he is the only one who do that?

I don't think so.

Maybe, maybe not. These guys aren't hard to miss, after all.

He was just in bad luck and was caught.

And he is tested negative!

The problem is that he stands in the publicity as a high level fighter.

But how about these TV announcer idiots on TV news every night, without wearing masks.

Will they also retire?

They had a rule and he broke it. TV announcers have no such rule, and their job doesn't involve pushing (and probably spitting in the process) each other. They are also generally well distanced from what I can see.

Completely agree, Monty. Get him to give a hollow apology as standard, disappear for a couple of weeks until everyone completely forgets it even happened, then come back for the next tournament.

This social shaming going on is beyond ridiculous - almost as ridiculous as the idiotic TV announcers fearmongering every day on TV without anything useful to say. For the most part, Japanese TV is pretty awful at the best of times, but they've really gone into overdrive with the stupid since the virus dropped into their laps.

As were all rikishi, Abi was told what he could/couldn't do during the pandemic and further during the tournament. He -chose- to violate the orders in an institution (sumo) known for its strict adherence to tradition and order. He put in his offer to resign out of spite, not out of any feeling of have dishonored his stable. Ok - - all that aside. Abi didn't know squat about sumo. A slapper/pusher, he knew the one technique, due to his having "fukai" arms. Yawn . . . boring.

his sumo style is unexciting, just using his longer than usual arms slapping, pushing, thrusting.

this thomson-reuters report missed out some very important information about his character/integrity if you can read japanese in other reports.

The tournament was also moved from its usual location in Nagoya to reduce necessary travel during the pandemic.

Monty: "But how about these TV announcer idiots on TV news every night, without wearing masks."

Why? Because the cameras might catch it? This isn't an "I know you are but what am I?" type of situation, my friend, and I'm not sure why you're calling newscasters "idiots" in response to what you yourself call a bad call on behalf of the wrestler.
