Tsuchi - AFAIK, Curves isn't an olympic games facility or any other womens social clubs you mentioned.

If you want to be part of the olympics it's simple - follow the olympic charter.

If you don't want to follow the charter, then it's simple - don't be a part of the olympics.

Nobody is forcing anybody. The Kasumigaseki Country club was invited to participate - not ordered. They can refuse and keep their own rules intact.

The original selection smacked of OBs club antics as many connected figures have their fingers in the pie. Only this time the pie was overcooked.

What a farce, it has taken IOC vice president John Coates to hold a proverbial gun to the heads of the Tokyo 2020 organizers and publicly demand that either the Kasumigaseki Country Club change its policy towards women's membership or suffer the loss of face and public humiliation of a change in venue.

Abe san best organize a search party to locate, cabinet colleagues Hirokazu Matsuno, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and Tamayo Marukawa Minister in charge of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games. Start with a room to room search of the National Diet Building. Check under chairs and tables or behind golf bags.

@ browny, spot on. As reported previously on JT, Kasumigaseki's original submission in English omitted their policies on women and now it is, in their own words, a 'nuisance'. So is traveling 44 km from the athletes' village when their courses as close as 6 km away offering full membership to men and, surprisingly, women.

Leave it to an international body to slap Japan into the modern age, since the JOC, under the 'leadership' of that fossil and misogynist Mori, refused to do anything but express a willingness to form panels to discuss it. It is amazing that in this day and age such clubs still exist, and I'm glad the IOC didn't just stop at "let women in for the Olympics" but demanded full membership. Tell them they have until the end of the day to decide. No panels, no discussions, just a yes or no. Period. It's not that hard.

At last someone connected the dots for the golf club.

There is precedence in regard to gender equality and the staging of international tournaments. Muirfield was presented with a simple choice, the membership voted, choosing to forgo any future staging of The British Open Tournament.

Significantly the necessary decision making process was over quickly.

No more Open at Muirfield after golf club votes against allowing women to join as members

Change the venue and move on.

Excellent news! However, this is far from being a Japan problem as I was recently corrected. While I do applaud this decision, its time for all golf clubs around the world to do the same. Any country tolerating exclusion of women should not be allowed to host the olympics, and I'm not just picking on Japan here. But this is still good news.

Please learn from this Japan.

All this controversy could have been avoided had either The Kasumigaseki Country club, or the Tokyo 2020 organizers carried out basic research, it takes just five minutes.

The goal of gender equality is enshrined in the Olympic Charter, which compels the IOC to “encourage and support the promotion of women in sport at all levels”. The Women in Sport pages display the IOC’s commitment to gender equality in sport.

Funny but I don't hear feminists rant about the social club for women only called "Curves" or any of the many other women only social clubs.

When circuit training becomes an Olympic sport, I'm sure the people who run the little Curves places will have to decide whether to let men in, or not take part in the Olympics.

Mind, I've yet to see a Curves big enough to host an Olympic event.

Curves exclude men, as they should, since they are a private social club. Do feminists really not understand the difference between public and private institiutions?

LOL. Are you comparing a golf course/club to a fitness gym? If you're a man, you have countless other options. Curves isn't preventing men from working out.

There are only a handful of golf club/courses though. Male-only clubs might have the legal right as private institutions, but they deserve any criticism they get. It's not like a female-friendly organization can simply buy up huge swathes of land to build their own golf coarse.

Do feminists really not understand the difference between public and private institiutions?

I think most do. You don't seem to understand the difference between apples and oranges.

Right on ! Next let's see if we can get the "OK" for women to step on a sumo "dohyo". (Let's not hold our collective breaths on that one folks !)

B.. bu.. but this is our culture!!

As always it has to be outside pressure to effect any meaningful change and force the oyaji dinosaurs to grudgingly realise it's 2017.

LOL, I couldn't have said it better myself

@Tsuchifumazu nobody going to force them to accept women, just as Coats said they will or wont accept women, if they dont then fine no Olympic golf will be held there. Im sure there are plenty of other course that accept women will jump at the chance to stage Olympic golf. Their loss is anothers gain. Your move Kasumigaseki

Any country that excludes men from participating int he LPGA tour should not be able to host an international golfing event. Make sense?

The city’s mayor conceded on Friday he might be forced to withdraw the bid, leaving only Paris and Los Angeles in a race which at one stage involved six cities.

These two cities love to spend other people's money, and the more of it they can spend, the happier they'll be.

Bravo to Budapest for a rare exhibition of financial sanity.

If it is truly a private club, then they get to make the rules on membership, and the Olympics should stay away. If they let business be discussed on the course or in the club house - it is not a private club. Are all membership fees paid by personal check and not any sort of money from the person's business? Does the club rent facilities from the public (land, etc)? I am willing to bet it is not truly a private club, and companies pay many of the fees. Ripe for a lawsuit! They are discriminating against women by not giving them an equal chance for business.

They should request to use golf courses on the bases. There are lots of them on US Facilities.

Curves? There are no big curvy women in Olympic sports. The women are all thin and trim. Some muscular, but in no way do they call themselves curved. They are healthy and that is the way women and men should be.

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

I know this is only an issue because of the Olympics but women have some women only groups and clubs too........

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

This is not a problem anywhere. There are no dots to connect. This is a private social club with a right to choose its membership. The olympics doesn't have to choose this club. Funny but I don't hear feminists rant about the social club for women only called "Curves" or any of the many other women only social clubs. Curves exclude men, as they should, since they are a private social club. Do feminists really not understand the difference between public and private institiutions?
