As one that worked in Qatar for 3 1/2 years, I have witnessed some violations. Qatar stopped confiscating passports as that has been identified as a form of human trafficking. However, even though the workers maintain their passports, they are not allowed to leave the country and will be held at the airport by law enforcement if they are without an approved exit visa so the control over the them still exists. Work accidents and deaths on all of the new soccer stadiums go unreported. Qatari's, as most Arabs look at the migrant workers as slaves and treat them poorly, some countries worse than others. Most migrant workers come from the Philippines, Pakistan, and other poor countries so the workers are just trying to make a better life for themselves and be able to send money back home to their families. I reported violations to the U.S. company that I worked for but they brushed off the reports as their only concern (in my opinion) is profits made from their contracts. I would NEVER take a posting back to that region again!
