With this announcement it is fairly reasonable to say that Tokyo lost its bid.

Why do you say that some14some? Can you elaborate your thoughts?

sidjtd: If Asia comes to the rescue of Tokyo, EU may rush and support Spain....like that it sets bad example for IOC selection committee.

And Coke and McDonalds will rush to the support of the Chicago bid.

I don't think this will help too much, especially when they say, "In show of support we're going to cut the ... games in 2014 to 35 events, the ... games in ... to, the ... games in ... to ..., the .... games in ... to," etc., and while Japan is going for the RWC, WC, and other international sporting events at the same time. They're not the only ones, of course, but they lack some of the clout the other nations have -- namely Europe (for the majority of the events, like WC). Good luck to them, though.

It is cheaper for Asian athlethes to go to Tokyo Vs. any of the other places, so it is natural and more beneficial for them to have Tokyo as the host. I guess Latin america will support Brazil, and Canada and the US will support Chicago.

Brazil will, and should, get it.

“Asia will always support any city from Asia”

What an amazingly dumb thing to say. Blows apart any pretense of impartiality and ensures that everyone else will vote for the local candidate too. That should clinch it for Brazil.

Why would the Asia Olympic Council back anything else but an Asian country?

Why would we wanna go back to Asia again when the olympics were just held in China? I say Brazil should get it.

Why should Chicago get it when "Dick" (Richard) Daley keeps renegging on his pledge for guaranteeing the funds for the games. He goes in front of the IOC and gives his word that he'll sign the guarantee, and then turns around and tells his city council that he hasn't signed the gurantee and may still not sign it since his city council is seemingly against it...

If Japan wins the 2016 Olympic bid, it should be hoped that the nation also improves the quality of it's athletes.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Japan trailed in the medal count badly, placing 11th in the overall, behind regional rivals China and South Korea, and 8th in the gold count, again, behind China and South Korea.

One would think a rich nation of 127 million with the 2nd largest GDP in the world in 2008 would perform better.
