For me, he does not appear a typical Japanese. His father is an Iranian and mother a Japanese. When he played in Japan, he looked more like a foreign player. He was big and his face exotic. I still do not think he has sly eyes.

Asians are not pussies like Hispanics and Blacks when it comes to meaningless BS like this! Rock on Darvish! Don’t let that burrito put you down, lol!

I didn't try to offend nobody

what a jerk...and he sounds a bit stupid.

I laughed reading this article that the old image of Japanese is still owned by contemporaries. The image of sly eyed Japanese was first depicted by French cartoonist Georges Bigot visiting Japan in the early Meiji period. Also the image of sly eyed ugly Japanese soldiers were spread in America during the the W.W. II. Gurriel might have had a hard time when he played in Japan surrounded all by sly eyed Japanese players.

He’s such a jerk. Thank god he’s no longer a Baystar. But I wanted Darvish to beat the heck out of the Astros.

Why do they always happen to be Spanish-speakers?

To be honest, Melania Trump's eyes look more oriental than most East Asians.

Low grade gray cells aside, this should serve as a reminder to anyone that adheres to the right wind Kool aid of exceptionalism that one may face similar or worse treatment outside their comfort zone.

"I didn't try to offend nobody," Gurriel said in Spanish through a translator. "I was commenting to my family that I didn't have any luck against Japanese pitchers here in the United States."

The racist gesture was bad enough. But lying through his teeth when he knows everyone else knows he's lying is worse.

A scumbag POS. Can anyone imagine if a similar gesture was made towards a black?

Lets hope MLB will come down on him hard.

All the beautiful women depicted in pictures in Heian Period are single eyelid. For Japanese, people who have his eyes lifted at the corner are a sign that a person has a good or strong spirit while with down eyelid at the corner are considered weak minded. I do not care what they think about sly eyes of us. On the contrary, isn't it mysterious and charming that Japanese women who are with single eye lid and sly eyes? While if anybody does such a thing in the office, he or she will be out.

Schopenhauer- yes, I’m sure Gurriel was thinking of Heian period paintings like the intellectual he is.

Improper home training. Sad.

Classy reaction from Darvish.

The Silly thing is, if the pitcher had been black, and he made a racist gesture, every tv show and paper in America would be talking about it right now. How bad he is, how he should be exposed and shamed as a racist.

But if you mock an Asian, or Mexican...not so bad.

Good point. Imagine if Chow from the Hangover trilogy was portrayed as a black character, named “Jamal” or “Tyrone” perhaps... The media would have a field day.

Mad respect to Darvish for making the entire thing a teaching moment to bring compassion into the world. He may have lost the game, but he's the winner

i thought all racist incidents were caused by the culture Trump has created and his hateful rhetoric? But somehow no one has connected him to this?

Also sometimes people make mistakes, Darvish was good to let it pass and be done with after calling it out.

Unfortunately for Gurriel, he did a p!$$ poor job of explaining himself!! But fortunately for the rest of us, he came off looking......somewhat less than intelligent and he is going to have to pay$$$$. Others can learn from this kind of mistake!!! But really, what could he say after that error!!!!

He defected from Cuba last year. I think it has more to do with upbringing.

Interesting that the usual suspects who accuse white people of being the devil are suddenly silent when the usual racist comments and gestures are from Hispanics or blacks.

I guess racism is ok as long as its directed towards an acceptable group.

Gurriel exposed himself as a mental retard. Maybe he needs to spend some time getting some exposure to prejudice against Hispanics to understand just how stupid he is. Darvish's response was class.

Dervish definitely took the high road on this one! I don't think I would meet the guy, though -- he is definitely not serious about not meaning it, and the meeting and 'apology if you're offended' would be accompanied by an eye-roll (possibly pulled at the corners again) and him stifling laughter, no doubt. Dervish has said what he said, and very well. Now he should just say no thanks to meeting him and return to play.

OssanAmerica: "Gurriel exposed himself as a mental retard."

And you find your own language acceptable?

what were you trying to do idiot?

And MLB gives Gurriel a slap on the wrist. A 5 game ban starting next season.

He won’t miss any time during the World Series.

Disgusting.

Yuli should have kissed his bat for hitting one of Yu's throws. That is the only gesture he could have made that makes sense. I am sure Yuli's family was watching and they saw him hit the ball. 5 game ban to not include the world series is not enough. He should be shamed and ashame of such juvenile behavior.

Gurriel doesn't even know he offended 18,271,225 Asian Americans (as of 2011) with his idiotic behavior.

Schopenhauer : "sly eyes"? I have never heard this expression before. It seems doubly derogatory, once for the eyes' physical property, and again for the suggestion of low cunning. I would not use this expression if I were you. It detracts unnecessarily from the main argument, IMO.

My wife is Japanese and has had the same gesture and shouts made at her in the street in London. Really quite uncomfortable for her.

It's strange to see minorities making racist comments and gestures towards other minorities. They should know better than anybody how ugly racisim is.
